Salamanca Market Aug 31, 2019

Well, it was supposed to get up to 19 degrees Celsius today. Maybe it did, I’m not sure, regardless, it was a mild and sunny day.

The morning started off with a visit from a young lady, originally from the UK, but she has lived the past ten years in Melbourne and is now living in Tasmania, doing a Marine Biology degree with the University of Tasmania. She purchased “Suspended”.

A lady, purchased a Superb Fairy Wrens card, to give to her sister-in-law, who is about to become an Australian citizen. She studied for hours and was very nervous about sitting the test and all to no avail because when she rocked up for the citizenship test she was told that she didn’t have to do it because she is over 60 years old! Family members advised her to become a citizen just in case her husband died before her and Australia decided to deport her. This was said in seriousness and it’s not surprising, especially with the treatment a Tamil family is currently receiving. Peter Dutton, Australia’s Minister for Home Affairs, claims that his hands are tied, and refuses to use ministerial intervention powers, yet he did intervene in 2015 to prevent two au pairs from being deported. It is distressing to view this family’s ordeal and that they will probably be forced to go back to Sri Lanka, where her fiancé was burned alive. They feel they will be in great danger, especially with all the media attention that their case is getting.

A man from Manchester, UK, attended a fire truck conference/exhibition in Melbourne (he works for company that makes drawer sliding mechanisms for fire trucks) decided that because his flight leaves Melbourne at 9:00 tonight, that he was able to catch a 9:00 am flight to Hobart and a 4:00 pm flight back to Melbourne and then continue onto the UK. Seems like a lot of travelling before a long haul, anyways, he’s taking a “Bunk Beds” and a “Salamanca Saturdays” print with him.

A mother bought a “Bunk Beds” print to give to her daughter to take to the UK with her for a family member’s birthday.
A lady, from Launceston, with a paper bag and extra cardboard from her last purchase, bought “Hayride” and “Under My Red Umbrella”. She also showed me a beautiful frame that she bought for the A-3 sized print of “Family Outing” that somebody had given to her.

A mother and adult daughter bought “Bunk Beds” and “Afternoon Siesta” to hang in the hallway of their house in Melbourne.

A lady, who is in Tasmania attending a civil engineering IPWEA conference, purchased  “Spiky Bunk Beds” and “Sleepy head” prints. Her and partner, drove their caravan 10,820 km, starting their trip from Busselton, Western Australia last month. They visited 8 states and territories in four weeks.

Unfortunately, there are sometimes casualties at the PJ Paintings stall.

The most popular prints once again today were Bunk Beds and Afternoon Siesta from the Sleepy Head series.

A thought to ponder: “It is good to love many things, for therein lies the true strength, and whosoever loves much performs much, and can accomplish much, and what is done in love is well done.” ― Vincent Van Gogh. I like this, well said Sir Vincent.

A Yoga Aid

I gave an “Afternoon Siesta” print to a work mate as a retirement gift with a card saying that I hope she is able to have frequent afternoon siestas, now that she’s leaving the workforce.  She loved it and was quite visibly moved by it.

She dropped into work last week and told me that she locked her eyes on “Afternoon Siesta” and it helped her relax through her yoga session. She told me again how much she loves it. So, “Afternoon Siesta” is not only much loved in a baby’s nursery, but also in retirement and in the yoga room!

Salamanca Market Aug 24, 2019

It was a rather mild day with a few scary wind gusts but things thankfully stayed intact. Today, “The Bun”, “Hair Extensions” and “Hair Accessories” debuted, and they did well but not as well as the Sleepy Head series.

“Hair Extensions” and “The Bun”

There were heaps of people dressed in the Kangaroo and Demon colours. They were doing the market before the AFL game at Blundstone Oval, Bellerive.

A couple from Melbourne, to celebrate her birthday, flew to Tasmania for the day, not even spending one night here. She purchased “Devilish Siesta” and “Afternoon Siesta”.

Two girlfriends, one from Cairns, the other from Townsville, both wearing the same plum coloured beanies with a beige pom-pom, bought “Spanish Eyes (Red)”, “Hayride”, “Afternoon Siesta”, “Devilish Siesta” and “Spiky Bunk beds”.

A lady, from Melbourne, having a weekender on her own, bought, and started using, a “Sleepy head” tote bag. A couple from Western Australia, purchased a “Salamanca Fresh” pouch for her to use at university.

I met the sister, from Adelaide, who travelled to Tasmania with her family, to celebrate her sister’s 40th birthday.  Her sister is doing psychology/weather thesis, which involves visiting Antarctica.

I met a family, living in a small Western Australia town. She’s originally from Seattle, USA. They bought a wombat and “Double Date III” print.

A group of young people from Hong Kong bought a variety of prints from the Sleepy Head series. Two ladies, visiting from Melbourne, bought a kookaburra print. Another couple from Melbourne bought a “Helping Hands” pouch. She said that she has so many tote bags that it was nice to be able to get something a little different that also can serve as a souvenir.

The most popular prints today were the Sleepy Head series, featuring Wombats, Echidnas and the Tassie Devils.

Kempton & Big Hill, please

I accompanied my friend to the historical town of Kempton, Tasmania today. Rain was predicted but blue skies prevailed.

way to Kempton
We took the back road to drive into Kempton. There were lots of sheep dotting the countryside, all facing away from the wind.
on our way
Beautiful, smooth, green slopes on the way to Kempton

We stopped at the Old Kempton Distillery for a cuppa, a yummy bowl of pumpkin soup and a painting drop-off.  The Distillery is hosting the Artlands 2019 exhibition, running from August 25 – September 29, from 10 am – 4 pm daily (free entry). My friend has entered two gorgeous long and narrow paintings of scenes of the southern midlands.

There are many interesting old buildings and houses along the main street.

I wanted to paint “Big Hill”.  I thought I would draw a picture with Big Hill dominating the composition but it didn’t turn out that way.  I’ll have to come back to do “Big Hill” justice.

I raise my glass and toast the Artsland 2019 exhibition at the Old Kempton Distillery. May many people explore the historical town of Kempton, including the Distillery, a really impressive, grand old building, and feast their eyes on art capturing this special part of Tasmania.

Salamanca Market Aug 17, 2019

It was hectic under blue skies today.  The first visitors to the stall this morning were from Singapore.  They each bought a little pouch and greeting card.  They asked me to sign their cards and pose for a photo.

Next, a couple, from Launceston, stopped by and purchased a “Meet Me at the Gate” and “The Three Amigos” print.  One is going to be a gift for her parents.

A “Hanging Out” greeting card was purchased for a teenager, who is always sleeping, I was told. Some framed prints went today too:  “Sleepy Wombat”, “Kiss Me Please”, “White Faced Scops Owls” and “Joy ride!”, with “Kiss Me Please” being purchased by my dog groomer.

My framed Original Painting of “Bird Watching” is making its way to Sydney to hang in the lounge room with Wendy Binks’ emus.

“Afternoon Siesta” and “Under My Red Umbrella” is travelling to Thailand and a couple is posting a “Devilish Siesta” print to their daughter living in Canada. Girlfriends from New Zealand bought a “Scarlet Robins” and “Hanging Out” print. A “Spiky Bunk beds” and “Devilish Siesta” is accompanying a young lady to Canberra. Two young optometrists, here on a work week/conference from Sydney, are returning with two A-5 sized prints: “Spanish Eyes (Red)” and “Who says emus can’t fly!?”, and a small “Salamanca Saturdays” pouch. A young lady from Atlanta, USA bought some greeting cards.

A man couldn’t believe it when he saw “Bonnie & Me!”. He has the exact same motorcycle and showed me a photo of his bike.  Needless to say, he bought the print.

An A-4 sized original painting of a wombat was purchased as a gift for her sister’s birthday.  I forgot to take a photo of it, so I can’t even show you what it looked like. L

The most popular prints today were the Sleepy Head series, featuring wombats, echidnas and Tassie devils.

A thought to ponder: I guess I’m a little weird. I like to talk to trees and animals. That’s okay though; I have more fun than most people”, Bob Ross (I guess I’m a little weird too because I talk to the animals I paint and welcome them to the world, once I give them nostrils to breathe.  My friends at art group find it quite amusing).
