Salamanca Market June 4, 2022

It was inky black when I left this morning, but I didn’t feel cold wearing my thermals and pure wool, thick socks.

My first visitor were two women, who had already purchased my some of my art at Peppercorn Gallery in Richmond https://www.peppercorngallery.com.au/ . They bought a framed print of “Lazy Days”, and a “Double Date” and “Bunk Beds” tote bags.

I met a Canadian couple from Calgary. He was wearing a Canadian rugby hoodie. Apparently, rugby is becoming a popular sport in Canada. They purchased a “Salamanca Saturdays” tote bag.

A young couple from Melbourne visited the stall. As she was looking more closely and perusing my art, she said that my gum leaves look familiar and that she thinks she has bought some of my art. It turned out that she had bought two small original paintings from my stall about six years ago. She has them framed and loves them she told me. They left with four prints.

Another visitor bought “The Bun” and “Bunk Beds” prints for her friend, who loves cockatoos and wombats.

A Swan supporter, (an AFL team, the Sydney Swans) dressed in the red and white footy shirt, purchased “Graduation Siesta” and “Share House” for her partner who is graduating soon.

A lady, who lives in Townsville, purchased three “Glamour Girls” prints for herself and two girlfriends. They went to school together in Townsville and are catching up in Tassie. A family visiting from New Zealand, purchased a “Lost Worlds” print. The mother grew up in Tasmania and walked the Lost World Track on kunanyi when she was in high school. It was an outdoor adventure excursion. You can’t actually ‘walk’ the Lost World track as it is mainly scrambling over boulders and trying to spot the next orange triangle to find which boulder you have to climb next. Several hours later, you reach this amazing open space, surrounded by the mountain’s glorious organ pipe rock formation.

Salamanca Market March 5, 2022

I navigated the stairs out of my house in darkness to make the short drive to Salamanca Market. Rain was forecasted but thankfully none eventuated.

My first visitors to the stall were locals and they purchased a “Lazy Days” print, followed by two sisters who bought “Leafy Decorum” and “Glamour Girls” for their mother, just because they love her. Their mother loves black cockatoos.

A “Sea Life” print is going to the Gold Coast to adorn a nursery. The couple are expecting their first baby. Water came close to their house but thankfully receded before it reached the house.

A newly married couple bought a “Double Date” print. A lady, visiting from South Australia, purchased a “Bunk Beds” print. She’s travelling around Tasmania before she heads home. Three ladies bought three small “Salamanca Fresh” pouches to remind them of their time here. A man bought a “Salamanca Fresh” cushion cover to take back to Melbourne. A young man from France purchased some Tasmanian bird images for a souvenir. He’s been travelling for 2.5 years, firstly visiting New Caledonia.

Two original paintings sold today, a painting of platypus and elephants. Unfortunately, I forgot to take a photo of both paintings.

It took me quadruple the time to drive home because there was a car accident before the Tasman Bridge. It was good to get home and put my feet up. 😊

Salamanca Market March 7, 2020

I set up the stall in semi-darkness this morning. On Thursday, when it was raining (the rain is very welcome) I was walking to work at about 6:45 a.m., while it was dark, and my left foot stepped into a massive puddle that I didn’t see. The water went over my entire shoe and I spent the rest of the day squish-squashing every time I took a step.

A couple, whose three children, who now have children of their own, bought three prints to post to two living in Boston, USA, and the other in Toronto, Canada. (They are lamenting that their grandchildren are living on the other side of the earth). They are posting: “Emu Boogie”, “Surfing Clifton Beach, Tasmania” and “Lazy Days” prints.

A framed “Duck Crossing” is going to her first grandchild, one year old, Ava, in Adelaide, SA.  Wendy, affectionately named ‘Wendy Wombat’, after walking the Overland Track about nine years ago, her reactions and love for wombats earned her this name that has stuck over the years. She’s has a lot of wombat pictures and ornaments but she couldn’t resist the Sleepy head wombat series of prints.

A couple, he originally from South Africa and she from Australia, purchased “Christmas Siesta”, “Lost Worlds”and “Rising Above It”.  Actually, about four Christmas Siestas sold today. Another “Rising Above It” was purchased by a young lady from Brazil.

A couple bought a “Glamour Girls” print for her sister who lives in Germany and is a hairdresser. A young Scottish couple, both doctors who have finished one year of working at the Royal Adelaide Hospital and are heading back to Scotland, purchased a “Sea Life” print.

Then I met Arianne from Saint Julienne, Canada.

Once again, I took the opportunity to try to haul out my French from the crevices of my long-term memory. I told her it was easier to maintain my French speaking skills in Canada, where everything you buy is written in English and French. I used to read the products’ French instructions and blurb daily, which went a long way to helping me retain my French. In Australia, virtually everything is presented only in English. Arianne said I should have my prints’ back information in both French and English, reflect my heritage. I thought this is a great idea and could help people in the same situation as me, trying to keep ourselves from losing our first languages totally. She gave me a little Canadian pin. “What the Devil!?”, “Christmas Siesta” prints and a “Lazy Days” bag are now accompanying her on her travels and adventures.

While I was packing up three original paintings sold:  “Fancy Pants”, “Walking with Flair”, “Blue Whale”, and earlier in the day, the framed original painting of a blue butterfly sitting on an emu’s beak sold.

Salamanca Market Nov 2, 2019

Rain is a good thing, and we needed it, but it would be nice if there was a rule that it wasn’t allowed to rain on Saturdays. It rained while setting up, stopped  and then rained when taking down.

I had a family from Chile visit and they chose three prints to take back to South America with them: “Beachside Chatter”, “Who Says Emus Can’t Fly?!” and “Glamour Girls I”.

An older man, from New Zealand, stopped in for a browse. I thought that his belt buckle looked like First Nations People’s art work and it was. He bought it 36 years ago in USA when he was doing a motor bike ride from Los Angeles to the Grand Canyon on a Triumph, hence, he bought “Bonnie & Me!”.

An older couple from Nevada, USA, who have spent a month on the mainland, ‘bumming around Australia’ as he described it bought some greeting cards and another American couple from North California, where the fires are burning, bought a “Duck Crossing” and “Sleepy Head” pouch.

A couple, with a very articulate four year old daughter, bought some prints. I was so impressed with this little girl’s communication skills and confidence. She just struck up a conversation and chattered away with me. Her vocabulary was impressive.

A couple from Victoria, bought a “Bunk beds” print. It was his birthday gift. I wished him happy birthday and he told me it was yesterday, the same day as my mother’s birthday! He said, ‘she’s probably the same age, 71’. Not so, he’s a spring chicken compared to my mother’s age!’

I met illustrator Marsha Wajer, who bought, “The Bun” and “Christmas Siesta”. An urban sketcher visited my stall, too. We did a Liz Steel workshop together a few years ago. She was on a girls’ weekend with a large group of her girlfriends.

A lady, who told me that when she was a kid, an emu stole her vegemite sandwich (definitely an Australian emu!), which after that incident, she was scared of emus. She must have gotten over it because she bought “Joyride” for her partner and “Spanish Eyes (Red)” for her sister.

A couple of ladies from Brisbane, bought a large “Salamanca Saturdays” tote bag for a friend who paid for their Tasmanian accommodation. A young lady bought a “Fairy wrens” print to send to her mother in the UK.  A couple, who did a direct flight from Perth to Hobart, bought “Bunk beds” and “Afternoon Siesta” prints.

Near the end of the day a young lady from Poland bought “Afternoon Siesta” for her parents. She’s been in Australia for six months and is returning to Poland on Tuesday.

As the market was coming to a close and people were heading up the street, I heard a boy, I’m guessing that he was about 10 years old, asking his father, ‘dad, dad, how’s my behaviour now, dad?’ I hope he achieved a gold star.

Salamanca Market Sept 7, 2019

It was a challenging and difficult day at Salamanca Market, battling wind and rain for most of the day. I definitely deserved my cup of tea at the end of the day, today.

The day started with a mother buying a “Taking a Dip” greeting card for her son’s wedding in November. A couple from Canberra bought a “Hair Accessories” print to go with their humorous Magpie print. A teacher from Melbourne, who was nursing a broken arm, bought “Bunk beds” and two small prints of owls.

A young lady, visiting from Canberra and soon moving to Singapore to join her partner who works for the Department of Foreign Affairs & Trade, will be taking a “Hanging Out” print with her. A “Glamour Girls” print is going back to Hong Kong and an “Off to the Races” is accompanying its new owner to Arizona, USA. A couple going to USA, visiting his sister in San Diego, bought some gifts to take along with them: two “Afternoon Siesta” prints and a “Salamanca Saturdays” print.

The table cloths and the sides of the gazebo are hanging inside to dry and bags & boxes are in front of the heater.

The most popular prints today was a tie between the owls and wombats.

Salamanca Market July 20, 2019

Once again the weather exceeded my expectations. I was thinking the temperature would be around 2 degrees Celsius this morning but instead it was a balmy 6 degrees when I drove out of the driveway at 6:45 am.

It was really busy at the market today.  I was told that about 60 delegates from Victoria were attending a Sutton Tools’ conference in Hobart but that would hardly account for the numbers perusing the market. There were a lot of school aged children from the mainland too. I thought their school holidays ended a week earlier than Tasmania’s.

A lady, living on a farm in central Queensland, bought four A-5 sized prints: “The Three Amigos”, “Double Date IV”, “Hayride” and “Glamour Girls”.  An x-Hobartian, now living in Brisbane, bought herself a “Salamanca Saturdays” tote bag and another lady, who used to live in Hobart, now living in South Australia, also bought the same bag.

A mother, from Brisbane, met her daughter in Melbourne and they flew together to Tassie for a holiday to celebrate her 21^st birthday, bought an “Afternoon Siesta” wombat print. Another mother and daughter pair, visiting from Devonport, Tasmania, bought three prints from the Cheer ‘em Up series to hang up in their Bed & Breakfast accommodation. Another mother and daughter, from Missouri, USA, living close to the Mississippi River, bought two cards: “What the Devil?!” and “Bunk beds”.

Two girlfriends, visiting from Queensland, bought “The Supremes” for their girlfriend. When they saw the print, they burst out laughing and instantly decided it was the perfect gift for their missing friend because the three do karaoke together.

PjPaintings at Salamanca Market April 20, 2019

A long weekend with a forecast of 23 degrees Celsius, and not much else is needed to have people venturing into the city for a Salamanca Market experience.

Early in the morning, at the Pj Paintings stall, a father let his son choose a print. He chose ‘Who says emus can’t fly!?’ and he quite correctly pointed out that the emus’ legs are bending the wrong way. Lucky artists have artistic license.

When emus sit, their feet go out in front of them. It looks like their knees are bending forward, but actually their knees are higher up, under the feathers where they can’t be seen. The visible part that bends forward are the bird’s ankles.

A couple bought a small original painting of a Red-tailed black cockatoo for their son, who married a Canadian lady, and are living in Chilliwack, B.C., where my sister lives.

 

Two ladies from Brisbane, Queensland, stopped in and bought a small original painting of platypus. They saw my painting of a dog and that started a dog photo exchange, as they have two cocker spaniels, named Poppy and Winston. Of course I had to show them photos of my Charli, an American cocker spaniel.

A boy, wearing a Calgary Flames cap, visited the stall with his mother. He was born in Pittsburgh, USA, lived two years in Calgary, Canada and now they’re living in Brisbane. He looked like he was around seven years old. They purchased an A-4 size ‘Lost Worlds’ print.

Two young ladies from France, on a six month holiday in Australia, bought some greeting cards to post to friends in France and a couple bought an A-5 ‘Glamour Girls’ sized print for their sister-in-law, who’s a hairdresser, and moving back to the USA.

The time flew by and suddenly it was packing up time. I won’t be setting up and packing up for four weeks now, as I’m off to do an urban sketching course. My prints and greeting cards will still be available at Salamanca but only in the Salamanca Arts Centre at Artefacts Inc Gallery for the next few weeks, rather than at site 30, but I will be back!

 

There doesn’t seem to be a most popular print today as there was an even spread purchased.

PjPaintings at Salamanca Market January 26, 2019

Hobart welcomed the cool change after a smoky, roasting hot Friday of 38 degrees Celsius and about 50 fires burning in Tasmania. The fires are still burning. We need rain.

A big cruise ship came in today and there was a rather large ‘Change the Date’ rally on the parliament lawns, next to Salamanca Market, with key speakers Bob Brown and Nick McKim.

In the morning, I met Ashley, who is working on Macquarie Island. She works for the Weather Bureau, tracking the ozone layer among other things. She’s also taken up watercolour painting and it sounds like she’s having rather good success with it. She’s finding the same things difficult that I do, painting backgrounds and shadows.

Three ladies, from Los Angeles, USA, travelling together, stopped at the stall and each of them bought something with the ‘Salamanca Saturday’ image. One bought a tote bag, another a print and another a pouch.

A couple from the Gold Coast, that have been holidaying and house sitting in Tassie for 2 months, purchased ‘Glamour Girls’ and ‘Story time’ (if my memory serves me well). Their son has moved to Tasmania. They didn’t want to overstay their welcome at their son’s house, so they have been house sitting.

A couple purchased two A-3 sized prints of ‘The Three Amigos’ to take to Europe with them for gifts. ‘The Three Amigos’ limited edition print run is quickly nearing its expiration number.

‘Bunk beds’ debut went very well today. It was love at first sight for a young lady from Sydney.

A young Spanish and English couple, living in Ireland, but working six months in Melbourne, and now having a short holiday in Tasmania, bought a ‘Sea Life’ print.

Another young couple, this couple is from Scotland, bought a small ‘Who, Who, Who are You? II’ print and some greeting cards. He said that his dad loves emus. In Scotland, they commissioned an artist to paint an emu with an owl, and the artist painted an ostrich with an owl. To say the least, they were not impressed. It’s a very common error. Despite ostriches being native to Africa, and emus are native to Australia, I am regularly asked if my emus are ostriches. Obviously when children are learning their alphabets, O for Ostrich, must be drummed in beyond saturation, and the poor E for Emu has little-to-no representation.

The saying “four seasons in one day” resonated true today. The morning started off overcast, then in the early afternoon the heavens opened and the rain poured down on us, triggering the familiar sound of gazebo awnings’ pooling waters being regularly emptied before they dumped on an unsuspecting market-goer. Then the sun and wind made their presence, which was great because it dried the gazebo and side walls just before packing-up time. Then hail arrived. As I was unloading the car, it was bouncing off my head!

 

A couple, visiting from Geelong, Victoria, touring Tassie on a motorbike, and loving the roads, bought “Who says emus can’t fly?!”

Grandparents of not quite 4-week-old first granddaughter, named Wren, purchased a “Double Date III” tote bag for the parents. A “Duck Crossing” tote bag was purchased for another first granddaughter, 1 year old, Indigo.

 

A “Who, Who, Who are You? II” print was purchased for her mother’s Christmas present, who lives in Sydney and loves owls. She has a collection of owl figurines and the daughter thought it was something different than adding to her collection but still in the owl theme. A lady visiting from Melbourne, bought a “Glamour Girls” print for her girlfriend, who is a hairdresser.

Sisters visiting from Peru, South America, purchased a “The Three Amigos” print to take back with them. A young man, originally from Brisbane, now living in London, returned to Australia for a wedding, now holidaying in Tassie, bought some dancing emu cards as a souvenir. A young lady, from Michigan, USA, also bought some cards as a souvenir. They’re easy to fit into a suitcase!

I met a lady, whose husband is attending an Ornithological (the study of birds) International Convention hosted by the University of Tasmania. They are held every second year and she loves that she can join and visit places that she has never travelled to. This was her first time in Tasmania. Two years ago, the conference was held in New Zealand, which was also her first time visiting there. Very appropriately, she bought a “Double Date III” pouch featuring Superb Fairywrens.
