PjPaintings at Salamanca Market June 8, 2019

It was another mild winter’s day at Salamanca Market. It was busier than last weekend with things ramping up for Dark Mofo and other activities taking place this weekend, for example, the Australia School’s Sailing Competition. The manager and organiser, from Adelaide, was very excited to lay her eyes on “Family Outing”. She bought it to give to her friend for her birthday.  She said that the only one in her group of friends at university that had a car, was her girlfriend, who had a red mini.  They used to all pile into her car to go to parties. This friend is turning 60 this year and has ordered a red mini (a real one) as a birthday present for herself and is having a big number “60” painted on it.

A return visitor, who bought a “Richmond Bridge” and “Suspended” print a few years ago, (she gave Suspended to her grandson, who loved it she told me), purchased more prints. This time, she bought: “Bunk beds”, “Surfing Clifton Beach, Tasmania” and “Hayride”.

A couple, celebrating their 22^nd anniversary, visiting from Adelaide, purchased a “Salamanca Saturdays” tote bag and small pouch. They moved to Adelaide four years ago from California, USA.  Their daughter married an Australia so they followed her to Australia.

A young lady, here from Perth, doing some work with Dark Mofo, bought “Bunk beds”.  She said that she’s going to hang it where her stairs are so it makes her smile each day when she goes down the stairs in the morning.

A lovely lady from Sydney, going to Melbourne via a stop-over in Tasmania, visited the stall twice.  She wished that her sister, who also lives in Sydney, had joined her for a sisterly holiday. She’s taking back with her “Bunk beds”, for her sister, “Taking a Dip” for herself, “Duck Crossing”, “Beachside Chatter”, “Who, Who, Who are You II” and “Hanging Out”.

Another conservationist working on the Orange-bellied parrot breeding program at the captive breeding facility at Five Mile Beach, Hobart, stopped by and chatted.  She’d like me to paint the Wedge-tailed eagle, Frogmouth and the Orange-bellied parrot. They are on my bucket list… J

PjPaintings at Salamanca Market June 1, 2019

It was another mild winter’s day at Salamanca Market. It was rather quiet at the market but a different story at Artefacts Gallery in the Salamanca Arts Centre, where two of my originals sold.  The newly painted big A-1 sized ‘Family Outing VI’ is going to hang in a Doctor’s waiting room.

Destined for a life of trying to keep people smiling despite their colds, influenza, broken bones, aches and pains.  

At the stall, I had an adult daughter buy a framed ‘Double Date IV’ for her mother’s birthday. She said that they have a shack in Dover, Tasmania, where Superb Fairy Wrens visit all the time. I had an adult son buy a ‘Black & White + One’ print to give to his piano-playing father for his birthday.

A young lady, from Spain, travelling the world, bought a ‘Spanish Eyes (Red)’ print to add to her art-work-wall collection.  She showed me a photo.  It looks very cool with masks from Hawaii and Indonesia, ceramic birds from Portugal and prints from the countries she has visited.

A couple touring Tasmania in their camper van bought some greeting cards and a Japanese exchange student bought a ‘Salamanca Saturdays’ tote bag. Ladies, visiting from the mainland, purchased a ‘Double Date III’ print and a pair of fingerless gloves for me!, so unexpectedly kind. They had visited the stall earlier in the day and I commented on the great gloves they had. A stall sells them for $5 a pair and on their return trip, I was presented with these beauties.

A local mother bought three prints from the Cheer ‘em Up series to decorate her four month old son’s bedroom: ‘Scarlet Robin Rescue’, ‘Duck Crossing’ and ‘Kookaburra Rescue’.

Today’s most popular print was the Superb Fairy wren prints.

At 2:00 am, the wind was howling, driving rain was pounding the roof of the house with accompanying loud claps of thunder and lightning that lit up my bedroom.   Not what you want to hear on a Friday night, despite Hobart, Tasmania, really needing rain.  But that is another aspect of Hobart that I really like, most of our rainfall falls during the night. That’s good for many reasons, including reducing water being lost to evaporation, as Hobart is the second driest capital city in Australia, so we need all the water we get!

I drove up the driveway in darkness, with mild and dry weather, arrived at the market at 6:40 am and got stuck into setting up. My first customer was a lovely couple from New Zealand.  They purchased a “Salamanca Fresh” small tote bag. Later in the day, they returned and added a “Duck Crossing” tote bag to their purchases.

Then a regular dropped by to buy another card for her father who lives in New Zealand.  She had sent him a “Duck Crossing” greeting card, which was a big hit.  When she had phoned him, he answered by saying ‘quack-quack’. This time she chose “Helping Hands” to send to him.

A lady, originally from the UK, now living in Toronto, Canada, is taking a “Bunk Beds” print home for her daughter.  A gentleman from the Isle of Man, who works in a trauma unit, told me about this mad car race that takes place on the island each year, where people drive the dangerous circuit at crazy speeds in about 17 minutes.  There is a history of unfortunate fates with this race but it continues to run.  He’s heading home to this race and not looking forward to it.  I hope it all ends well, with everybody safely crossing or not crossing the finish line.  He’s taking back with him “Salamanca Fresh”.

Then I met a big fan of mine, Mel and her husband, from Sandy Bay, Tasmania. They bought earlier in the year “Surfing Clifton Beach, Tasmania”, and this is where they regularly surf.  It’s hanging in their house and giving them and their visitors much joy, so they have decided to add “Family Outing” and “Beachside Chatter” as accompaniments.

 

A lady bought two prints featuring emus riding motorbikes, one for her daughter-in-law and one for herself.  She said that she has just returned from visiting Vietnam.  I asked her if it was humid and hot? She said it wasn’t, that it was just perfect and proudly told me that she rode a motorbike for several days in Vietnam. Good on her because she was of a rather mature age.

A family from Texas, USA, that have been living abroad for six years because the father of the family is in the military, who are currently living in Japan, loved and raved about “Afternoon Siesta”.  She said she almost bought the original that is hanging in the Artefacts Inc. Gallery at the Salamanca Arts Centre, a centre to support Tasmanian artists. She said that in Japan that the ‘in’ thing right now is learning how to create tranquil art, and she said it’s like I’ve taken lessons from Japan with the white space left in the picture, the pose of the wombat and the gum leaves being gently caressed by a breeze.

At the end of the day, I met a Belgian young lady.  On average, I only meet one Belgian per year. She spoke Flemish.

Earlier in the day, two French speaking, Swiss young ladies visited the stall and we had a short conversation in French. They are taking home with them a “Hanging out” print. While they were in the stall, a dear, used to be my neighbour when she was living in Tasmania, friend appeared and purchased prints from the “unfurling” series.

Before my former neighbour had arrived, I drew the initial drawing of another ‘unfurling’ idea.  I can picture so many ideas in my mind.  I have a friend who says she can never see pictures in her head.  This astounds me because my brain has so many ideas and pictures banking up against each other.  I’m going to have to soon find another brain to rent because this one is filling up fast and is going to overflow.

Thirty-two greeting cards went today, possibly more because it is easy to miss a few when trying to track them on paper.  Guess what I’ll be doing tonight?! I hope more arrive before next week’s market otherwise the card selection will be a little thin.

This morning it was dark when I got up… the days are getting shorter. Yikes!

A lady, from Melbourne, is in Tassie for just one day to look at property. She and her partner, firstly from Sydney, but that got too big for them, so they moved to Melbourne, which has also become a big, congested city, so now they have their eye on Hobart and are considering another move. She bought a print titled “Barn Owls” for her thirteen year old daughter.

A lady from Gippsland stopped by, and told me that she visits her son each year and buys a print from my stall. She knows how many years he’s been living in Tassie by counting how many of my prints she has… and how many years has her son been living here?… the answer is five.

A German tourist bought a small “Sea Life” print for her friend in Germany who gave her instructions to get her a whale souvenir.

I met Canadians, who live close to the PNE in Vancouver, BC. I often drove over the Second Narrows Bridge and past the PNE, with the old, wooden rollercoaster in plain view, and its memories of the many rides I had on it. They bought an A-5 sized print of “Bunk beds”.

I met a young lady from France, who has been in Australia for one month of her six month stay. She wanted to practice her English, and I, wanted to practice my French. So, we conversed in different languages. She bought a greeting card to send to her friend.

A lady, from Warana, Queensland, became very excited when she saw the “Cheer ‘em Up” series. She bought three of the prints to put up in her daughter’s bedroom (or maybe her lounge room she said because she loves them so much).

A dear friend from Adelaide, extended family, with a new baby son, who gave me a gorgeous, big smile and his grandmother from Holland, visited the stall. They left with two of my latest additions:  “Bunk beds” and “Sleepy head” prints.

A gentleman, told me that so many people from the cruise ship had bought these yesterday from the gallery at Salamanca (that would be Artefacts Inc Gallery). He said they were very kinky but I think he meant quirky! Lol

Two different couples bought small original paintings of Echidnas.

After the market, and unpacking the car, I was off to see the Baker’s Boy, Missy Higgins and John Butler Trio at Tolosa Park, and then today, Sunday, I did gallery duty from 9:30 am – 5:00 pm. I met many Italians and French, and had plenty more opportunity to practice speaking French! I think I deserve an early night.

Under blue skies, with Ocean Monarch, a huge drill rig that was towed to Ralphs Bay in the Derwent River for maintenance and repairs, the Christmas Pageant, and a Falls Prevention in Aged Care Conference, Salamanca Market took place.

Drill rig sitting in the Derwent River.  I watched some of the three tug boats moving it in.  They spent virtually the whole day bringing it to its resting spot.

Participants of The Point to Pinnacle, a tough half marathon, from Wrest Point Casino to the top of Mt Wellington/kunyani, were checking out the market. The race is on tomorrow.

A couple from Carolina, USA, purchased a ‘Tassie Map’ tote bag, depicting emus’ varied Tasmanian adventures.  A ‘Helping Hands’ print was purchased by a mother-to-be for the baby’s room.  It’s their first baby.

A young man bought a ‘The Three Amigos’ print to take with him back to China. A young lady, who now lives in Townsville but used to live in Launceston, purchased ‘Afternoon Tea’ and ‘Off to the Races’.  A lady bought six greeting cards and told me all of them are going to be sent to friends and family living in New Zealand.  A lady, visiting from the UK, whose mother had sent her two of my dancing emu prints, bought a ‘Scarlet Robins’ print to add to her pjpaintings prints.

There wasn’t a most popular print this weekend. The most popular item this Saturday was pouches and tote bags.  Here’s one little girl, who was pleased as punch with her new tote bag (her mother gave me permission to post her photo).

Today the weather was a pleasant contrast to last week’s, thankfully! I couldn’t cope with too many Saturdays like last week.  My nerves would be shot!

The morning started with somebody visiting the stall wearing the most gorgeous, blue felted-wool hat.  It had two beautiful felted flowers attached to it.  It looked stunning.  I was tempted to ask her if I could buy it off her!   She used to live in Townsville, Australia, and now lives in Phoenix, USA.  She bought a tote bag and some pouches to take back with her.

There were quite a few students about.  The university year is finished and people were off on well-deserved holidays. A young couple from Greece, bought “Spanish Eyes (Red)”, a Dutch couple, she is doing a PhD in Sydney, which is focusing on sleep with people with Celebral Palsy, they bought “Bonnie & Me!” and a student studying at the University of Tasmania (UTAS), from Maine, USA, studying seaweed (polyculture – seaweed, shellfish and fish, a proposed more environmentally friendly fish farming methodology) bought a couple of stickers. A young lady, from Indonesia, who has finished her Master’s degree, bought two tote bags for two of her friends, who also finished their Masters degrees.  The three are going back to Indonesia.

A lady, visiting from San Francisco, USA, bought a “Two to Tango” and “Hoo, Hoo, Hoo Merry Christmas!” tote bag.  She said that she does tango dancing and that outside of Argentina, San Francisco has the largest population of tango dancers.  It is a very popular dance in San Francisco!

A couple, with his sister visiting from the UK, bought five different small dancing emu prints.  They are going to hang in the billiard’s room.  Then, a man from Borneo, purchased an A-3 size print of “Poppy Fields” and “Salamanca Saturdays”.  He said that he is going to design his house-build around these prints!  I don’t think there are too many Pj paintings’ prints in Borneo.

A packet of Christmas cards were bought to be posted to the UK.  A framed “Salamanca Saturdays” print will be adorning a wall of Dunromin B&B in Mountain River, Tasmania.  A “Salamanca Fresh” tote bag was purchased for a Secret Santa present. A “Salamanca Fresh” print is heading to Townsville, a “Salamanca Saturday” to Brisbane and Adelaide.  I think a lot of people are taking advantage of the direct flights from Adelaide to Hobart. A young lady, from Brisbane, bought “Scarlet Robins” and “G-Day” and then returned with her friends, who also bought a “Scarlet Robins” print.  A “Duck Crossing” pouch is going to Minnesota, USA.

It was a welcome relief to put my feet up at home and enjoy a cup of tea after a busy, but interesting and good day at Salamanca Market.

PjPaintings at Salamanca Market September 29, 2018

It was Grand Final Day today.  It’s a big deal here in Australia.  The final Australian Football League (AFL) game for 2018, this year Collingwood versus the West Coast Eagles, from Perth, Western Australia fought it out at the Melbourne Cricket Ground (MCG) stadium.  The West Coast Eagles prevailed.

Despite the big game, there were a lot of people at the market and a lot of people liking framed prints today.  All the bubble wrapping certainly kept me busy.  I ran out of bubble wrap, so I was cutting open padded large envelopes to put around frames. Some were heading to Bendigo, Cairns, Brisbane and Victoria.

I had a chat in French with a young lady visiting from France.  She purchased ‘Under My Red Umbrella’.  A student, studying Zoology at the University of Tasmania (Utas), bought a card and two stickers.  A lady visiting from Melbourne purchased four stickers, an A-5 sized print of ‘The Three Amigos’ and ‘Who, Who, Who are You?II’ and some greeting cards. Two ‘Off to the Races’ pouches were purchased for two granddaughters.

My favourite Galah of the five or so Galahs I painted during the week was purchased. The group were speaking another language. I’m not sure where the Galah will be making its home.

PjPaintings at Salamanca Market September 22, 2018

On Thursday, when I was teaching my adult academic writing class, my day job, I started sneezing and a full-blown cold quickly came upon me.  I had to go get a box of tissues and try to get through the rest of the day teaching in between sneezes and blowing my nose.

I didn’t feel too bad this morning, so off to the market I went.  Well, I struggled through the day and wished I had stayed snuggled up in my comfy, cozy, warm bed!

Spanish Eyes (Yellow)

I met quite of few visitors from America today: a lady from California, who has been dreaming of visiting Australia ever since she was a little girl.  She bought ‘Spanish Eyes (Yellow)’.  Two different groups from Oregon.  A man, who described himself as a nomad, purchased two extra small prints of ‘Who, Who, Who are You? II’ and ‘Salamanca Saturdays’. A couple from New Jersey bought ‘Glamour Girls’ and ‘Family Outing’ to make the return trip back to USA. Another happy stall visitor is taking her ‘Who, Who, Who are You?II’ print back to Hong Kong.

A grandfather, originally from Croatia, with his two adult granddaughters visited the pjpaintings stall.  Apparently, he has an extensive elephant collection.  He was quite enraptured with ‘Thunder’ so his granddaughters bought it for him.  One of the granddaughters is an artist and loves all things creative, especially working with clay and sewing.

I met a few tourists that have taken advantage of the new direct Perth to Hobart flights, including a mother, who broke her wrist ice-skating in Tasmania, on day two of their holidays!  Parents of 20 month old Banjo, who, I was told, is obsessed with kookaburras and owls, were thrilled to have found ‘The Three Amigos’ and ‘Barn Owls’.

A couple, who bought ‘Duck Crossing’ last year for their baby, Lucille, told me that they can’t wait to give it to her for her upcoming birthday.

Lastly, I met a young lady, originally from Germany, an exchange project manager, working in Sydney.  She’s returning to Germany in November.  She bought a small ‘The Three Amigos’ pouch.

There was just enough wind and rain to keep me on my toes throughout the day.

I had another visit from my Devonport dental surgery, who is lining the walls with pjpaintings pictures to help calm the nerves of those biding time in the waiting room.  Where magazines may not succeed in bringing a smile onto a face, a pjpainting may.

I had a young man from Scottsdale, Tasmania visit the stall.  I asked him where he did his year 11 and 12.  Traditionally, high schools in Tasmania go to Year 10 and then you attend a college in the city to do years 11 and 12, but he was able to do the two senior years at Scottsdale High School, thanks to a state government extension trial to help more rural Tasmanian students complete year 12. He’s now doing Health Science at the University of Tasmania in Launceston.  He does some drawing too.  A perfect fit when describing procedures, he can also illustrate them to help patients better understand what is happening.  He is taking back with him a ‘Who, Who, Who are You? II’ print.

A couple from Launceston, who bought ‘Thunder’ last year, is adding ‘Who, Who, Who are You? II’ and ‘The Three Amigos’ to their collection on pjpaintings.

I had proud grandparents of 14 month old, Lily, from Brisbane, visit the stall today. Last year they bought a ‘Who, Who, Who are You? II’ print for her.  It’s hanging up in her bedroom and she loves it.  She can almost say emu and when her parents or grandparents count the owls, she bows her head after each owl is counted.  Lily is now going to be welcoming ‘Duck Crossing’ to her bedroom wall.

PjPaintings at Salamanca Market August 25, 2018

It’s so nice to have the days getting lighter and longer. A couple of ladies visited the stall at approximately 8:30 am. They said that a stall holder told them that the market opens at 9 am but that the tour bus they took yesterday had told them that Salamanca Market started at 8 am. The latter is correct and I was glad to start the day with their early visit. They bought a tote bag each and a small zipper pouch for a friend who loves owls.

I had a nice conversation with a Hobartian, in his early 20s. He draws and is also trying to draw using an ipad program. He bought a card of ‘Suspended’, his favourite of my paintings, and a sticker. He came back in the afternoon because he had lost his sticker, so he bought another ‘Salamanca Saturdays’ sticker.

A young lady, from Barcelona, studying in Sydney, purchased some emu themed Christmas cards to post to Spain. Grandparents from Mornington, Victoria, bought a ‘Family Outing’ and ‘White Faced Scops Owls’ prints to hang up in the room that their grandchildren sleep in when they visit.

A couple that live on a rural property in Lismore purchased a framed ‘Hayride’ and another couple, farmers in Queensland, who are not experiencing drought conditions, also purchased ‘Hayride’.

A lady is taking a ‘Story time’ and ‘G’Day’ print home to Colorado, USA and a young couple is taking ‘Suspended’ back to Queensland with them. A piano teacher bought little ‘Duck Crossing’ pouches to give as thank you gifts for people that helped with the production of their school’s play, a modified Ugly Duckling story.
