Salamanca Market April 9, 2022

The first customers of the day had just returned from doing the Overland Track. https://www.taswalkingco.com.au/overland-track/ . They are visiting Tasmania from Rock Hampton, Queensland. They purchased “Goldilocks and the 20 Penguins”, “Hammock Life”, “Meet Me at the Gate” and “Maggie & Maggie” prints.

A framed small original painting of a cute, seated wombat was purchased for a grandson’s bedroom on the Gold Coast.

A “Hanging Out” print is going to make its home in Melbourne with a lady from France, who has been living in Australia for ten years and is a French teacher.

A young lady from Winnipeg, Canada, who is spending a year in Australia, bought some A-5 sized prints. Another young lady bought an A-5 sized print titled “Emu Boogie” for her piano playing sister that lives in New Zealand.

A lady from Arizona, USA, bought a “Lazy Days” tote bag. She’s visiting her son. She’s originally from Australia and has been living in United States for 20 years.

A couple from Sydney purchased my newest print of my original painting titled, “Maggie & Maggie” and a “Tu-whit and Tu-whoo” print.

Three girlfriends discussed which emu they were on the “Salamanca Fresh” tote bag and bought one to use at the market. It went very well with her Australian designed, and made, colourful dress.

Another couple ladies bought some cards, prints and an original painting of a platypus looking at a fish. I don’t have a photo of the Platypus painting but it was similar to this one except that they were looking at a fish instead of a turtle.

Salamanca Market April 2, 2022

It was a drizzly and breezy day, which was better than rainy and windy. 🙂

My very first visitors to the stall purchased two large “Salamanca Fresh” tote bags and a “Lazy Days” cushion, gifts for friends and one tote bag for her.

A couple from Melbourne, who have a large pencil original drawing of twelve birds in their dining room and on their bookcase beside this picture, they have a collection of small black & white original pictures of birds. They bought my little fairy penguin drawing to join this collection. They saw Fairy Penguins on Bruny Island. https://www.abc.net.au/news/2017-01-20/how-to-see-little-penguins-in-tasmania/8197000 That is where I saw them for the first time but I reckon the best place to see them is at Stanley. That is a stand-out memory for me.

A lady, who used to live in Vancouver, living in Australia now, bought four small prints from the wombat in hammocks in series for her grandchild’s bedroom.

Grandparents from Ireland, visiting their son and family who lives in Deloraine, Tasmania, bought “Family Outing”. It is her son’s family with the three children in the back.

Some young people from Netherlands bought some greeting cards, some French men visited the stall and then some Belgians stopped in. I don’t often meet Belgians at the market. I heard them speaking French and asked them where they were from. They’ve been in Australia for 2.5 years and are flying back to Belgium in two weeks. Her favourite bird is the kookaburra so “Sitting on the Fence” will soon be embarking on a long trip to Belgium.

A sister bought a “Suspended” print for her brother and new baby and a young couple, down just for the weekend from Melbourne, purchased “Bunk Beds” and “Spiky Bunk Beds”.

A few originals have found new homes too: an urban sketch of a house in New Town, a Monarch butterfly, a moose, a whale on a spouting boat and “Spotted”. “Spotted” was purchased by a couple from the Blue Mountains, NSW https://www.nationalparks.nsw.gov.au/visit-a-park/parks/blue-mountains-national-park . Their daughter lives close by and there are magpies that visit her every day for a feed. She just loves watching the antics that the birds get up to.

A lady from Pennsylvania, USA bought a “Helping Hands” and a wombat print. She has family that lives in Tasmania. She told me that she bought prints from me last time she was here and that visitors to her house frequently compliment and ask where she got the artwork from.

It was chilly in the morning. My face felt cold while setting up the stall. As the day progressed, so did the temperature, eventually getting up to 27 degrees Celsius. We could hear constant helicopter activity and sirens at the market. I found out that was because there was a fire at Mt Nelson. https://www.abc.net.au/news/2022-02-19/watch-and-act-issued-for-hobart-suburb/100845458 I think it has been successfully dealt with, thankfully.

My first visitors to the stall was a couple that have been living in Melbourne for five years and are moving back to Ireland. They bought “Enchanted Forest I”.

Then I had another couple, who bought “Bunk beds” and “Sitting on the Fence” and they told me that they will be coming with them back to Ireland. They have a two- and four-year-old and are also living in Melbourne. They were planning on moving back to Ireland and then the pandemic happened, forcing them to postpone the move. Both families are moving in less than two months. What an undertaking! I feel tired just thinking about a move like that.

“The Three Amigos II” was the best seller today. A couple bought a “The Three Amigos II” print for his sister who is going back to Germany, where she currently lives and works. She’s a violinist in Germany. He has another sibling and the three of them affectionately call themselves the three amigos. Another young couple bought three prints of the kookaburras because he wanted one for himself and his two friends. The three of them also call themselves the three amigos. They also bought framed prints of “Bunk beds” and “Silent Disco”. They also asked if they could have a photo of us. I happily obliged.

Then, “The Three Amigos II” went to a couple from the Gold Coast, QLD and a few others sold but I couldn’t catch where their destination was. I went home without a single “The Three Amigos II” print.

A regular visitor to my stall gave me this little memento of my birthplace in Belgium. It is unheard of to see anything connected to Hasselt, Belgium in Tasmania.

It doesn’t take long until I’m leaving for the market in semi-darkness again. Thankfully blue skies and sunshine soon made their presence.

The first visitors to the stall were a young couple from Brisbane. They saw several echidnas while exploring Tasmania and said they had a soft spot for them. Therefore, “Spiky Bunk Beds” was their chosen print.

A couple visiting from Hervey Bay, Queensland, the whale capital of Australia he told me, bought an A-3 sized print of “Who, Who, Who are You? II”. Another couple from Adelaide and Sydney bought “Who, Who, Who are You? II” also. A gallery that is representing me phoned me during the market to tell me that they sold the original painting of “Goldilocks and the 20 Penguins”. When they were visiting Tasmania, she bought a print of “Goldilocks and the 20 Penguins” and when she got back to Sydney, she decided she just had to have the original painting. So, Goldilocks the Wombat, is going to make its home in Sydney.

Salamanca Market, November 20, 2021

It was a drizzly Saturday and a wet set-up. With The Tasmanian Made Market at the newly refurbished Derwent Entertainment Centre https://www.stadia-magazine.com/news/renovation-refurbishment/tasmanias-derwent-entertainment-centre-renovation-to-feature-digital-first-fan-experience.html and protests in front of the Parliament House, Salamanca Market felt quieter.

The first couple visiting my stall purchased a “Goldilocks and the 20 Penguins” and a “Double Date IV” print. They told me that they have many visitors to their birdfeeder at the Sunshine Coast and that they started taking drawing & painting classes together. They were impressed with my Yellow-tailed black cockatoo in my “Iconic Aussies” print. They had to paint this bird in one of their classes and said that this has helped them gain a greater appreciation for bird paintings. They returned later in the afternoon and up-sized their prints and added “Iconic Aussies” to their purchase.

A lady from Adelaide purchased “Hanging Out”, “Spiky bunk beds” and “Iconic Aussies”. Another lady purchased “Spiky bunk beds” and “Taking it Easy”. I was glad to see this because people have asked me to paint something that more closely matches with Spiky bunk beds’ hammocks, so I painted Taking it Easy, but so far, people haven’t been matching them together, until today. I commented that they were a pair and she immediately acknowledged the same coloured hammocks. It was nice to receive the reinforcement.

An A-3 sized “Weightless” print is heading to Brisbane and “The Three Amigos II” to Toowoomba. She is visiting Tasmania with friends from the Sunshine Coast, Qld.

And on cue, it started raining again when it was packing-up time. On the way home, just before the Tasman Bridge, I saw a stall holder pulled over on the side of the road changing a flat tire. They had all their crates, gazebo, shelving and the like, on the ground, to be able to get their reserve tire out. I felt very sorry for them and so grateful to be able to get home, get wet things airing and make myself a cup of tea!

Salamanca Market October 9, 2021

Today felt like a mixed-up day. We couldn’t park in our close-by usual spots, rain arrived at packing up time, with my car out of reach, and my Square app stopped working at 2 pm, but I’m happy that it didn’t stop earlier in the day, and all-in-all, I can’t complain. It was a good day, with many happy interactions.

A couple from the Gold Coast, who have travelled around a lot of Tasmania, including Stanley and Bruny Island, bought a “Double Date IV” print. Two ladies from Perth, spending two weeks in Tassie, bought the same print.

A lady bought a small “Lazy Days” pouch for her 3-year-old granddaughter and another grandmother bought “Motherly Emutions” for her son. I didn’t get a chance to ask her what her mother’s connection is with frogs.

There was a lot of birthday-present-buying being done today. A young lady bought a “DefendConserveProtect” tote bag for her mother-in-law’s birthday, which is today. Another lady bought a large “Lost Worlds” print for her friend’s birthday.

A couple from Adelaide bought a “Richmond Bridge, Tasmania” and a “Salamanca Fresh” print. A couple from Perth, WA, bought a “Salamanca Saturdays” cushion cover. A lady, who during the week bought a “Hanging Out” print from Tiger ina Papera https://www.facebook.com/TigerInaPaperaUniqueWoodcraft/ was so pleased to discover my stall and that she could buy a matching cushion cover, which she did.

A grandmother bought “Silent Disco” for her granddaughter that likes to dance, “Emus Can Fly!” for her grandson that likes cars and motorbikes, and “Entanglement” for herself. Another lady bought “Rising Above It” for a 12-year-old girl.

A couple, who wanted to buy a gift for her sister, wanted three A-3 sized prints, each featuring three emus. I wasn’t sure if I could fulfill this request, but we did achieve success. They purchased “Salamanca Fresh”, “Glamour Girls” and “The Supremes”.

Australiana Greeting Cards

The greeting cards feature a platypus enjoying life, a sleepy Tasmanian devil, a family of echidnas, a relaxing wombat and dancing fairy penguins. The animals are all endemic to Tasmania, (so maybe I should name them Tasmanialiana! lol) an island, off the larger island of Australia.

The beauty of greeting cards is that the recipient can get that warm, fuzzy feeling over and over again, each time they look at the card and/or read the words and thoughts you have written. Do you keep and re-read cards that you have received? Every once in a while, I pull out my stash of greeting cards and re-read them. It brings back smiles and memories. It’s a gift that keeps on giving and the recipient can wear the smile you gave them for weeks.

The greeting cards come in two sizes and are printed on quality card. They are nice to frame too.

It was a rather slow-moving day at the market on Saturday but there was a lot to be thankful for. The sun, and not the wind, was out, and there were no driverless vehicles on the move. Last week, a van was left in neutral without the handbrake on and the van rolled into my next-door neighbour’s gazebo.

The morning started off with “Suspended” being purchased by a lady who informed me that it was going to hang in her boat.

Three girlfriends from the northwest coast of Tassie, helped one choose an A-3 sized print of “Glamour Girls”. She wants to hang it above her bathtub. A local Hobartian, who collects fairy wren items, purchased a “Meet Me at the Gate” print. A “Meet Me at the Gate” framed print was also purchased by another Hobart resident.

A couple purchased a “Bunk beds”, “Hanging Out” and “Devilish Siesta” to hang up in their Bed & Breakfast accommodation in St. Helen’s, Tasmania. At the very end of the day, during packing up, there were two couples buying similar sets of prints, but I didn’t have the opportunity to chat much, but I do know that one was a graphic designer. I was quite keen to depart as soon as I could to get home, unpack the car, and get changed to go see the Tasmanian Symphony Orchestra play Beethoven IV. https://www.tso.com.au It was a wonderful concert. 😊

As I write this post, on Sunday morning, it is raining and the Derwent River is awash with white caps, which makes me feel even more thankful for yesterday’s calm and mild conditions. Due to the ideal winter weather conditions of yesterday, there were more people out and about.

My first customers at the stall were three sisters, meeting up in Tassie, where one of the sister lives, to celebrate a sister’s birthday. One purchased a “Salamanca Fresh” tote bag and another bought an A-4 sized print of “Meet Me at the Gate” for her friend’s Christmas present. They meet at the gate to go walking together and she loves fairy wrens. A gift tailored for the individual!

Then I met a locum nuclear medicine specialist doing a stint at the hospital here but because of the lockdowns he was not going home for his few weeks off. He bought “Southern Flow” and “Weightless” prints for her. I didn’t get his name, but he also has a sole business selling shooting equipment. He represented Australia twice in the Olympics and a few times in the Commonwealth Games. I imagine it was in the Men’s trap shooting??

A couple from Townsville bought a “Richmond Bridge” and a “Silent Disco” print. A young lady, looking for a gift for her girlfriend, who lives in the Richmond, Tasmania area, bought her a “Two to Tango” tote bag. This is another tailored made gift because this girlfriend has a male and female emu as pets!! Their names are Ernie and Bert! 😊 Emus as pets are unusual pets but having emu pets in Tasmania is even more unusual because they are not endemic to Tasmania. “Two to Tango”

I was pretty keen on packing up and getting away as soon as the gates opened. I was making good time and everything was fitting back into the car quite well and when I finished, I saw my gazebo standing there trying to look inconspicuous. Arg. I had to unpack half the car to pack it again, then got home and unpacked again and then headed out to the Welcome Swallow Brewery’s opening celebrations. https://www.welcomeswallow.com.au/ It’s an awesome venue and space. It was a great evening with amazing tasting boutique beer, made from Nigel’s homegrown, organic hops and raspberries.

Salamanca Market July 31, 2021

It was a mild start to the day and then the rains came. Thankfully it passed. With various states across Australia in lockdowns, the numbers were significantly down at Salamanca Market.

The first sale of the day was a greeting card by a lady visiting from Brisbane. Then a couple visiting from Queensland bought two medium-sized pouches, one for their 4-year-old granddaughter’s birthday. They purchased a “Salamanca Fresh” and “Family Outing” pouch.

A young man stopped by, freshly off a deep-sea research ship back from exploring/researching Australia’s deep-sea Indian Ocean Territories. The ship that docked a few days ago in Hobart. https://museumsvictoria.com.au/article/investigatingtheiot/ They have identified many new species: some blind and/or faceless species and many new crustations. He showed me some of his photos of the newly discovered species. He purchased a “Bunk beds” and “Sea Life” print.

A couple chose a “Double Date” print for their mother. Another couple, from Brisbane, purchased a “Sea Life” and “Silent Disco” print. Brisbane is going into a three-day lock-down, so they are going to stay longer in Tassie.

At the end of the day, while I was packing up, a daughter and her mother, expecting her third child, chose a “Bunk beds” and “Sea Life” print. She’s having her baby in Tasmania and then they are returning to Fiji, where they live.

After packing up the market stall and then unpacking the car when I arrived home, I got changed into 60’s outfit to go to my friend’s 60^th birthday party. The music was so much fun to dance to!
