Salamanca Market, October 15, 2022

There was sun and rain today, and guess when the rain decided to come??? Correct, at packing-up time.

The first customers of the day were visiting from Central Queensland. They were on a bus tour. They purchased “Glamour Girls” and “Bunk Beds” prints.

A wildlife volunteer from Dubbo bought a “Bunk Beds” and “Devilish Siesta” print. She told me one of her best experiences was bottle feeding baby wombats, that they snuggle right in and wrap their fingers around your finger.

A young lady, from Paris, France, in Tasmania for a research conference with her employment, bought two greeting cards. She’s here for two weeks.

An Irish man, residing in Melbourne, Victoria, bought a “Hammock Life” cushion cover. He was wearing a cool hoodie with a “gym + coffee” logo on the sleeve. He said it was an Irish brand.

A lady, originally from El Salvador, now living in Maleny on the Sunshine Coast in Queensland, purchased a “Hammock Life” and “Friendship Refreshes the Soul” tote bags to take to South America when she visits. She said that there is a creek in Maleny, close to where she lives, that she walks along every day, and she sees platypus there about three times a week. How awesome is that! https://oursc.com.au/lifestyle/adventure-sunshine-coast/adventure-sunshine-coast-maleny-boardwalk-platypus-walk

Two ladies from Argentina, speaking Spanish, with one translating in English, purchased a “The Bun” print. They laughed about the story behind the painting. I told them that the yellow-tailed black cockatoo has the shortest crown out of all the black cockatoos, so when the others are flaunting their crowns, they can hold their heads high and say ‘well, la-de-da, look at my hair-do’.

A man that drove down from Sydney, purchased “Salamanca Saturdays” and “Silent Disco” prints. He’s hoping that he can still get on the Spirit of Tasmania despite the flooding in Devonport.

Two ladies visiting from Perth, WA, bought “Bunk Beds”, “Bunk Beds Trio”, Spiky Bunk Beds”, “Afternoon Siesta”, “Devilish Siesta”, and “Taking it Easy” prints, and a “Lazy Days tote bag.

Salamanca Market, October 8, 2022

It was another sunny, Tasmanian Saturday.

The first customers of the day were visiting from New Zealand. They bought two A-5 sized prints of the market: “Salamanca Fresh” and “Salamanca Saturdays”. https://pjpaintings.com/collections/the-world Another couple from New Zealand purchased “What the Devil!?”, “Bunk Beds” and “Scarlet Robins”.

A couple originally from Chile, South America, now living in Sydney, bought a “Glamour Girls” and “Outback Glamping” print. https://pjpaintings.com/collections/emus They were looking for images of three emus.

A lady from Sydney purchased “Bunk Beds”, “Kiss Me Please”, “Taking it Easy” and “Spotty”. She must like frogs because she asked if I had done any more frog paintings.

A couple from Sydney, visiting Tasmania by car, purchased a small original wombat painting.

A couple from Adelaide bought a Christmas Greeting card pack, an original painting of a church in Newtown, Tasmania that I sketched and painted on site very early in the morning, and “Scarlet Robins”, “The Three Amigos” and “Morning Melody” prints.

A lady approached me with an A-5 sized print of “Hanging Out”. She said that she wanted to buy it because she got this one tattooed on her arm. She told me she googled sleepy wombat and brought the image to the tattoo parlour to have it tattooed, minus the safety pins. She didn’t seem to be aware that she was breaching the copyright that is attached to all my paintings, as they are my ideas and original artwork.

This is the same image that I discovered this week being sold on a paint-by-number website. Thankfully, it was removed when I notified them that they did not receive permission to use it. On my website, I do have that my images are Copyright protected, but I think I will have to start adding this to each image as I have discovered “Hanging Out” also being sold on a colouring book website, my “Scarlet Robins” images used on scarves and so on.

I had a family from Mt Gambier, SA visit my stall. The three girls wanted to buy prints with their Christmas and birthday money they had saved for the market, but the parents said they were just starting, that they have to see the rest of the market and if they still wanted something from here, they would return. Later in the afternoon, there they were. Each girl purchased something and because it is their hard saved money, I gave them a discount. The oldest girl, who looked about 9 years old, chose an A-4 sized print of “Tu-whit and Tu-whoo”, the middle sister chose a small, framed print of “Kiss Me Please” and the youngest, who must have the sharpest eye for art, chose an original, framed painting, titled, “Aussie Friends”.

Wishing you a great upcoming week.

Salamanca Market Nov 2, 2019

Rain is a good thing, and we needed it, but it would be nice if there was a rule that it wasn’t allowed to rain on Saturdays. It rained while setting up, stopped  and then rained when taking down.

I had a family from Chile visit and they chose three prints to take back to South America with them: “Beachside Chatter”, “Who Says Emus Can’t Fly?!” and “Glamour Girls I”.

An older man, from New Zealand, stopped in for a browse. I thought that his belt buckle looked like First Nations People’s art work and it was. He bought it 36 years ago in USA when he was doing a motor bike ride from Los Angeles to the Grand Canyon on a Triumph, hence, he bought “Bonnie & Me!”.

An older couple from Nevada, USA, who have spent a month on the mainland, ‘bumming around Australia’ as he described it bought some greeting cards and another American couple from North California, where the fires are burning, bought a “Duck Crossing” and “Sleepy Head” pouch.

A couple, with a very articulate four year old daughter, bought some prints. I was so impressed with this little girl’s communication skills and confidence. She just struck up a conversation and chattered away with me. Her vocabulary was impressive.

A couple from Victoria, bought a “Bunk beds” print. It was his birthday gift. I wished him happy birthday and he told me it was yesterday, the same day as my mother’s birthday! He said, ‘she’s probably the same age, 71’. Not so, he’s a spring chicken compared to my mother’s age!’

I met illustrator Marsha Wajer, who bought, “The Bun” and “Christmas Siesta”. An urban sketcher visited my stall, too. We did a Liz Steel workshop together a few years ago. She was on a girls’ weekend with a large group of her girlfriends.

A lady, who told me that when she was a kid, an emu stole her vegemite sandwich (definitely an Australian emu!), which after that incident, she was scared of emus. She must have gotten over it because she bought “Joyride” for her partner and “Spanish Eyes (Red)” for her sister.

A couple of ladies from Brisbane, bought a large “Salamanca Saturdays” tote bag for a friend who paid for their Tasmanian accommodation. A young lady bought a “Fairy wrens” print to send to her mother in the UK.  A couple, who did a direct flight from Perth to Hobart, bought “Bunk beds” and “Afternoon Siesta” prints.

Near the end of the day a young lady from Poland bought “Afternoon Siesta” for her parents. She’s been in Australia for six months and is returning to Poland on Tuesday.

As the market was coming to a close and people were heading up the street, I heard a boy, I’m guessing that he was about 10 years old, asking his father, ‘dad, dad, how’s my behaviour now, dad?’ I hope he achieved a gold star.

The most popular prints today were the wombats.

A thought to ponder: “I am not strange. I am just not normal”, Salvador Dalí

Wishing you an awesome and creative upcoming week,
