Salamanca Market June 19, 2021

Brilliant weather for Dark Mofo, the AFL game at Bellerive and Salamanca Market today! There were a lot of people at the market today.

I met a lady that took a direct flight to Hobart from Perth. She came for Dark Mofo and is going to explore the north of the state for a week. She asked if I had a print of a cockatoo or a galah, her favourite birds. I showed her “Iconic Aussies”, and she bought the A-3 sized print of it.

An adult daughter and mother, rushing to get to their flight back to Newcastle, bought a “Bunk beds” print and greeting cards.

Two families travelling together, one from Canberra and the other from Sydney, purchased “Lazy Days”. Another lady from Townsville is also taking home “Lazy Days”.

I met a local young couple that bought some cushion covers for a birthday present for her. I haven’t got them on my website yet but they are coming. They are 40 x 40 cm. I have the cockatoos, wombats, Salamanca Saturdays, Scarlet Robins and a few other images on the cushion covers.

A couple, visiting from Darwin, who have been touring Tassie for 2 weeks, going up the west coast to Cradle Mountain and returning to Hobart, purchased a “Sitting on the Fence” A-3 sized print. Two young ladies visiting for Dark Mofo, from Brisbane, both bought Spiky Bunk Beds.

A young from Queensland that saw Fairy Penguins coming on shore at Bicheno, Tasmania bought a
“Silent Disco” print.

A couple from Brisbane, visiting their friends, bought “Hair Accessories” and two prints of “Who says Emus can’t Fly?!?. Apparently one of their grandfathers used to frequently ride his motorbike in Tassie.

Salamanca Market Nov 2, 2019

Rain is a good thing, and we needed it, but it would be nice if there was a rule that it wasn’t allowed to rain on Saturdays. It rained while setting up, stopped  and then rained when taking down.

I had a family from Chile visit and they chose three prints to take back to South America with them: “Beachside Chatter”, “Who Says Emus Can’t Fly?!” and “Glamour Girls I”.

An older man, from New Zealand, stopped in for a browse. I thought that his belt buckle looked like First Nations People’s art work and it was. He bought it 36 years ago in USA when he was doing a motor bike ride from Los Angeles to the Grand Canyon on a Triumph, hence, he bought “Bonnie & Me!”.

An older couple from Nevada, USA, who have spent a month on the mainland, ‘bumming around Australia’ as he described it bought some greeting cards and another American couple from North California, where the fires are burning, bought a “Duck Crossing” and “Sleepy Head” pouch.

A couple, with a very articulate four year old daughter, bought some prints. I was so impressed with this little girl’s communication skills and confidence. She just struck up a conversation and chattered away with me. Her vocabulary was impressive.

A couple from Victoria, bought a “Bunk beds” print. It was his birthday gift. I wished him happy birthday and he told me it was yesterday, the same day as my mother’s birthday! He said, ‘she’s probably the same age, 71’. Not so, he’s a spring chicken compared to my mother’s age!’

I met illustrator Marsha Wajer, who bought, “The Bun” and “Christmas Siesta”. An urban sketcher visited my stall, too. We did a Liz Steel workshop together a few years ago. She was on a girls’ weekend with a large group of her girlfriends.

A lady, who told me that when she was a kid, an emu stole her vegemite sandwich (definitely an Australian emu!), which after that incident, she was scared of emus. She must have gotten over it because she bought “Joyride” for her partner and “Spanish Eyes (Red)” for her sister.

A couple of ladies from Brisbane, bought a large “Salamanca Saturdays” tote bag for a friend who paid for their Tasmanian accommodation. A young lady bought a “Fairy wrens” print to send to her mother in the UK.  A couple, who did a direct flight from Perth to Hobart, bought “Bunk beds” and “Afternoon Siesta” prints.

Near the end of the day a young lady from Poland bought “Afternoon Siesta” for her parents. She’s been in Australia for six months and is returning to Poland on Tuesday.

As the market was coming to a close and people were heading up the street, I heard a boy, I’m guessing that he was about 10 years old, asking his father, ‘dad, dad, how’s my behaviour now, dad?’ I hope he achieved a gold star.

Salamanca Market Oct 26, 2019

Thankfully the stormy weather held off until after stall holders were packed up.

Today, I debuted my sister’s, Nadine, adorable and quirky art.

The first visitor to the PJ Paintings stall was an adult son and mother. The mother bought a “Who, Who, Who are You?” tote bag for her sister who lives in South Africa and loves owls. She thought she’d like the quirkiness of the emu in the image. She’s visiting her next year.

A couple, visiting from Melbourne, stopped by and told me that their Mum has quite a few of my prints hanging in her house. They bought her one more: “Family Outing”.

A young couple from Germany, their second day of their two month stay in Australia, debated whether or not to buy “Afternoon Siesta”. They didn’t want to buy too much too soon otherwise they will definitely go over their luggages’ weight allowance. In the end, they couldn’t resist the totally relaxed look of the wombat and made the purchase.

A lady bought a large “Salamanca Saturdays” zip pouch to store her small camping coffee machine. A couple from Oregan, USA, bought some motorbike riding and dancing emu prints.

 

Zora, from Germany, who has finished a stint of working on a sheep farm in Tasmania and is now going to be a tourist before working again, in Sydney, bought a “Christmas Siesta” greeting card. She wants to buy a card from each city she visits because they’re affordable and portable souvenirs. Her Australia trip is an 18th birthday present from her grandparents.

Then I met a New Zealander, who’s playing in the finals of the Ladies Badminton tournament being held in South Hobart. I wished her good luck despite she is playing against a Tasmanian pair. She purchased “Who, Who, Who are You?II” and “Outback Glamping”.

The saying “four seasons in one day” resonated true today. The morning started off overcast, then in the early afternoon the heavens opened and the rain poured down on us, triggering the familiar sound of gazebo awnings’ pooling waters being regularly emptied before they dumped on an unsuspecting market-goer. Then the sun and wind made their presence, which was great because it dried the gazebo and side walls just before packing-up time. Then hail arrived. As I was unloading the car, it was bouncing off my head!

 

A couple, visiting from Geelong, Victoria, touring Tassie on a motorbike, and loving the roads, bought “Who says emus can’t fly?!”

Grandparents of not quite 4-week-old first granddaughter, named Wren, purchased a “Double Date III” tote bag for the parents. A “Duck Crossing” tote bag was purchased for another first granddaughter, 1 year old, Indigo.

 

A “Who, Who, Who are You? II” print was purchased for her mother’s Christmas present, who lives in Sydney and loves owls. She has a collection of owl figurines and the daughter thought it was something different than adding to her collection but still in the owl theme. A lady visiting from Melbourne, bought a “Glamour Girls” print for her girlfriend, who is a hairdresser.

Sisters visiting from Peru, South America, purchased a “The Three Amigos” print to take back with them. A young man, originally from Brisbane, now living in London, returned to Australia for a wedding, now holidaying in Tassie, bought some dancing emu cards as a souvenir. A young lady, from Michigan, USA, also bought some cards as a souvenir. They’re easy to fit into a suitcase!

I met a lady, whose husband is attending an Ornithological (the study of birds) International Convention hosted by the University of Tasmania. They are held every second year and she loves that she can join and visit places that she has never travelled to. This was her first time in Tasmania. Two years ago, the conference was held in New Zealand, which was also her first time visiting there. Very appropriately, she bought a “Double Date III” pouch featuring Superb Fairywrens.

It was a beautiful blue sky day today, which brought people to the market to enjoy the warm spring weather.

The day started with two friends visiting from Mornington Peninsula, Victoria. One bought a print for each of her grandchildren: “Hayride”, “Family Outing”, “Helping Hands” and “All Ears”.

A return visitor from Darwin purchased “Spanish Eyes (Red)”. He said that he bought, framed and gave a pjpaintings prints as a wedding gift last year. He reported that the recipients loved it. It’s always nice to hear good news stories like that. 🙂

A couple from Sydney, he sporting a skiing t-shirt, purchased “Weightless”. I found out that they are snowboarders.

A decisive man from Geelong, walked into the stall and immediately pointed to a framed print of “The Three Amigos”. It’s a gift for his wife. A family bought two “Richmond Bridge” prints, one for herself and one for the house sitter. She loves the bridge she told me. Two ladies visiting from the Hunter Valley and Maitland, close to where I lived for five years, are taking back with them “Glamour Girls”, “Story time” and “Salamanca Fresh”.

Two young ladies, one returning to Taiwan in two days and the other studying and working in Sydney, engaged in friendly conversation and a serious deliberation exercise before choosing “Sea Life” and “White Faced Scops Owls” prints. They will be making their home with Clara in Taiwan.

A teacher, from Mackay, Queensland on Long Service Leave (LSL), bought a Salamanca Fresh tote bag. She teaches 28 grade 4 students (10 year olds). They’re a brilliant class with a lot of drive and initiative. They started their own science and sustainability clubs and more.

My friend, Emma, who works at an aged care facility, told her work colleague to stop at my stall, which she dutifully did. It was lovely to meet her. She was drawn to the owl prints, in particular “Tu-whit and Tu-whoo”.

A lady from NSW bought “Who says emus can’t fly?!” as a present for a 102 year old lady, who is still an adventurer. She lives independently and is up for anything. She said that she can imagine her going for a motorbike ride if the opportunity arose.

A mother from Brisbane said that her children like had drawn art and nature. She chose “Weightless” and “Who, Who, Who are You?II” for them. And lastly, while packing up, a grandmother with her daughter and youngest grandson dropped in and bought a small “G’Day” print. They have a pet emu named ‘Footloose’. They hatched and raised him. The grandmother said that the grandchildren play with it just like they would if he was a dog. They showed me a photo of Footloose. It has such a gorgeous face. Footloose lives with his family in the Grampians, Victoria region.

The most popular prints this weekend were: Who, Who, Who are You? II and the whales.
