It was the usual start early this morning: lifting crates, heaving the gazebo open, bustling around, chatting and the like to set up for the day.

My first customer purchased “The Three Amigos II”. She’s visiting from Victoria. I think this was her first time in Hobart. They usually stay in the north of the state because they own land in St Mary’s, a small town on the east coast of Tasmania https://www.eastcoasttasmania.com/discover/town/st-marys/ . They came to Tasmania on the Spirit of Tasmania ferry.

A mother bought “Family Outing” for her daughter living in Toronto, Canada. Her son-in-law and daughter travel a lot with a stuffed emu accompanying them everywhere and it especially likes to photobomb their travel photos.

A very excited visitor from One Tree Hill, South Australia, purchased “Storytime”. She’s starting a new job in a newly built, beautiful school library. A wife bought a cushion cover for her husband’s birthday. She bought a “Maggie” cushion cover for her Collingwood Magpie AFL husband. He just got a t-shirt with a magpie on the front of it. Her name is Maggie, short for Margaret. Sometimes in jest, he tells her how much he loves his Maggie….long pause… football team.

It was a warm and busy Salamanca Market. My first customers of the day were a couple from Melbourne. They bought a “Fairy wrens” print to send to her mother living in Rockhampton, Queensland. https://www.aussietowns.com.au/town/rockhampton-qld

A family visiting from Brisbane bought a “Richmond Bridge” and “Glamour Girls” print. Then they went to Tiger ina Papera Gallery https://www.facebook.com/TigerInaPaperaUniqueWoodcraftsalamancagallery/ in Salamanca Place and bought “Salamanca Fresh”, “Beach Date” and “Two to Tango”. Then they came back to my stall and bought more prints: “Spanish Eyes (Yellow) and I can’t remember the others. They love my emus and it was so lovely to see people enthusiastically connect with the art.

A lady from Penrith, Sydney purchased a “What the Devil!?!” and “Maggie” print. She told me that they leave a dish of water for their regular magpie visitor. On a hot 40-degree Celsius day, the maggie came and found the water dish empty, and looked at them with head turned sideways. They added water, it had a drink, sang a shorter rendition of its song for them and flew away. Another lady from the Sunshine Coast, Queensland also bought “Maggie”. She said that there was a magpie at her workplace that used to come in and eat bits from the pot plants in the foyer. She used to be able to get really close and have conversations with it. It never swooped at her. Magpies have very good memories and remember those that help them.

A young lady, who has recently moved to Hobart from Newcastle, NSW, purchased a “Bunk Beds” print. She has started work at the hospital two weeks ago.

A young man from Denmark, discussing his purchase via Facetime with his partner, purchased “Bunk Beds”, “Hammock Life” and “Salamanca Saturdays” prints to take back to Europe. “Bunk Beds” is also going to Berlin, Germany with a woman who is visiting her cousin living here.

Three paediatrician speech pathologists bought a “Glamour Girls” print to hang in the office that they share in Melbourne. A water colourist from Sydney, purchased a “Taking it Easy” and “Friendship Refreshes the Soul print”. She works fulltime and the last painting she did was about a year ago. Her new year resolution is to make time to paint.

“Surfing Clifton Beach, Tasmania” is going to Ireland. She told me that she is going to frame it and it will remind her of her Tasmanian holiday.

A woman, who lives in Vancouver, but her father is from here but moved to Vancouver, Canada, hence her being born in Vancouver, bought a “Lost Worlds” and “Fairy wrens” print. Her brother lives in North Vancouver, where I grew up.

Then, I met another person who has a connection with Vancouver. He’s originally from Iran, living in the Netherlands, visiting Tasmania to visit his roommate he had in Iran. His partner, also from Iran, immigrated to Vancouver, Canada. She is currently in Vancouver visiting her family, where he is going to join her, before they both head back to their home in the Netherlands. He purchased “Blossoming Friendship” and “The Three Amigos”.

Packing up went smoothly, so I arrived home a little earlier than usual.

It was a busy day at the market with two cruise ships in, summer school holidays and sunny weather, that is until it was packing-up time. It rained just long enough for everything to get wet so it had to be hung out to dry at home.

My first customers of the day were a mother and daughter. Then a man bought “Meet Me at the Gate” for his wife who loves Superb Fairy-wrens. They have fairy-wrens all over the house, he told me. “Meet Me at the Gate” also sold to a lady from South Australia who said she has many walls to fill, and a mother from Cressy https://www.aussietowns.com.au/town/cressy-tas I said that judging by how many bags she was carrying that she was having a successful day at the market. She said she’s having a kids-free day and decided to come to Salamanca Market. She had bought a lot of gifts for her young children.

A lady from Port Fairy, Victoria bought “Maggie & Maggie”. A younger lady bought the same print. She was from Norway and will be spending 5 months in Australia. Another lady, from Kansas, USA, bought three prints: “Hammock Life”, “Spiky Bunk Beds” and “Afternoon Siesta”.

The sky was a glowing orange-red when I left the house for Salamanca Market this morning.

My first customer of the day was somebody from Sydney visiting Tasmania. She’s looking forward to doing her three-day acrylic class that she enrolled in. She purchased a “Salamanca Saturdays” cushion cover to remember her Tasmanian visit.

A family of four were drawn into the PJ Paintings stall by the 9-year-old son. A “Sitting on the Fence” print. I gave him a hefty discount. They used to live in Tasmania and now they live in Melbourne. They are here for their Nan’s 80^th birthday, along with her other 18 grandchildren that live all over Australia and have also made the journey for this milestone birthday.

A grandmother bought an “Unwinding” print for her 4-year-old grandson and a teacher working across two primary schools bought four emu prints to display in both her offices. She wanted the emus because she thinks that the children will engage with them. She purchased “Family Outing”, “Glamour Girls”, “Story time” and “Joy ride”.

A lady, living approximately 80km from Melbourne, in regional Victoria, bought a “Christmas Siesta” print. She has a wombat that lives on her property, and she has recently spotted an echidna! I forgot to ask her if she has named her wombat.

I got absolutely saturated setting my stall up during the early hours of this morning. Thankfully the rain did stop by the afternoon. It felt like there weren’t as many people at the market today.

My first sale was a small original painting of a wombat with helpful lady bugs. It’s similar to this one, below.

Parents and their son, from Allandale, NSW, http://www.australias.guide/nsw/location/allandale/ purchased an “Emu Boogie” greeting card for their son’s piano teacher and a large “Salamanca Saturdays” tote bag for themselves.

Parents and their adult daughter stopped at the stall. The daughter really liked the original titled, “Holding Hands”. They left and the father came back and bought it to give to her for her upcoming birthday. Later in the day, a lady who been eyeing the same painting, came back to buy it and was disappointed to discover it had sold.

A mother and daughter, from Poland, bought “The Three Amigos II” and a “Suspended” print. The kookaburra print is going back to Poland but Suspended is going with the daughter to New Zealand where she has done one year of high school. She’s going to do one more year of high school and then start her university degree in New Zealand.

It was inky black when I left this morning, but I didn’t feel cold wearing my thermals and pure wool, thick socks.

My first visitor were two women, who had already purchased my some of my art at Peppercorn Gallery in Richmond https://www.peppercorngallery.com.au/ . They bought a framed print of “Lazy Days”, and a “Double Date” and “Bunk Beds” tote bags.

I met a Canadian couple from Calgary. He was wearing a Canadian rugby hoodie. Apparently, rugby is becoming a popular sport in Canada. They purchased a “Salamanca Saturdays” tote bag.

A young couple from Melbourne visited the stall. As she was looking more closely and perusing my art, she said that my gum leaves look familiar and that she thinks she has bought some of my art. It turned out that she had bought two small original paintings from my stall about six years ago. She has them framed and loves them she told me. They left with four prints.

Another visitor bought “The Bun” and “Bunk Beds” prints for her friend, who loves cockatoos and wombats.

A Swan supporter, (an AFL team, the Sydney Swans) dressed in the red and white footy shirt, purchased “Graduation Siesta” and “Share House” for her partner who is graduating soon.

A lady, who lives in Townsville, purchased three “Glamour Girls” prints for herself and two girlfriends. They went to school together in Townsville and are catching up in Tassie. A family visiting from New Zealand, purchased a “Lost Worlds” print. The mother grew up in Tasmania and walked the Lost World Track on kunanyi when she was in high school. It was an outdoor adventure excursion. You can’t actually ‘walk’ the Lost World track as it is mainly scrambling over boulders and trying to spot the next orange triangle to find which boulder you have to climb next. Several hours later, you reach this amazing open space, surrounded by the mountain’s glorious organ pipe rock formation.

It was a beautiful summer’s day today.

My very first visitors to the stall purchased a “Suspended” (a humpback whale) and “Afternoon Siesta” print, followed by a young couple from Sydney, buying a “Hanging Out” print.

A couple, who came to Tasmania from Geelong via the ferry, chose a “Bunk Beds” print. Another person chose “Lost Worlds” for herself and “Bunk Beds” for a work colleague who cared for an orphaned wombat that spent its days at the office and was allowed to run around early in the morning before they were open to the public. The wombat’s name was Nigel.

Lost Worlds, which has the Tasmanian thylacines, lost to our world but their presence still felt, embedded in the foreground of the painting.

An expectant mother from Sydney, purchased “Meet Me at the Gate” for her grandmother who loves Superb Fairy-wrens and an Enchanted Forest greeting card for her mother.

A lady from Geelong, NSW, bought a “Hammock Life” print. Her son and her used to watch platypus in the river close to their house. He passed away and she said now she’s obsessive about platypus. She told me that she’s going to hang “Hammock Life” in her kitchen.

The original painting titled “A Flair for Strutting” was purchased by a man from Moonah, Hobart. I have actually recently sold five original strutting emu paintings: “Earthy” and another one at Peppercorn Gallery in Richmond, two website orders: “Taking the Fish for a Walk” and “Tiger and I”, (www.pjpaintings.com) and now at Salamanca Market, “A Flair for Strutting”.

A couple, she was originally from Turkey and has been in Australia for two years and got married here, now living on the Central Coast, NSW, purchased “Poppy Fields (Yellow)” and “Leafy Decorum” prints. They had already bought some of my prints from Tiger ina Papera Gallery https://www.facebook.com/TigerInaPaperaUniqueWoodcraftsalamancagallery/ during the week. They want to move to Tasmania. He’s an electrician and she’s a yoga teacher. They are travelling to the north of the state to help them decide where in Tasmania they want to move to.

A lady bought a large “Helping Hands” zip pouch for her friend’s 50^th birthday, who is also a quirky artist she told me.

Wind gusts of up to 50 kmph were predicted, so all the gazebo sides went up today. With a blue roof and little air circulation, the sauna-like conditions and the pollen from the large tree made it difficult to not sneeze. Thankfully, the 50 kmph didn’t eventuate.

The first couple that visited the stall were from Tamworth, NSW. https://www.destinationtamworth.com.au/ They purchased a “Bunk beds” print and then noticed my Poppy Fields print. They said that they had this print. Her sister, who has bought a lot of art, moved overseas, and couldn’t take it with her, so she gave them her art, which Poppy Fields was among her collection.

A lady from Brisbane, saw a man carrying a “Salamanca Saturdays” tote bag and told me it looked so good that she wanted to buy one too. So, she did. It is a bright and colourful bag, washable and made in Australia.

Today felt like a mixed-up day. We couldn’t park in our close-by usual spots, rain arrived at packing up time, with my car out of reach, and my Square app stopped working at 2 pm, but I’m happy that it didn’t stop earlier in the day, and all-in-all, I can’t complain. It was a good day, with many happy interactions.

A couple from the Gold Coast, who have travelled around a lot of Tasmania, including Stanley and Bruny Island, bought a “Double Date IV” print. Two ladies from Perth, spending two weeks in Tassie, bought the same print.

A grandmother bought “Silent Disco” for her granddaughter that likes to dance, “Emus Can Fly!” for her grandson that likes cars and motorbikes, and “Entanglement” for herself. Another lady bought “Rising Above It” for a 12-year-old girl.

A couple, who wanted to buy a gift for her sister, wanted three A-3 sized prints, each featuring three emus. I wasn’t sure if I could fulfill this request, but we did achieve success. They purchased “Salamanca Fresh”, “Glamour Girls” and “The Supremes”.

Salamanca Market Update, March 27, 2021

Rain at 6 am, 7 am and at 3 pm was forecasted and unfortunately, I must report, that the weather was predicted correctly. Rain book-ended the market, wet setting up and wet taking down.

I met many visitors from the mainland of Australia today. A couple who took the ferry from Victoria, and she experienced sea sickness for the first time, purchased an A-3 sized print of “Joyride”.

Salamanca Saturdays was purchased as a souvenir by a couple visiting from Brisbane.

Another couple bought a penguin card for their Venezuelan son-in-law who is fanatical about penguins.

A couple, who bought one of my prints a few years ago, for their former Argentinian exchange student’s first child, has come back to buy a print for their second child. They’ll be posting to Switzerland, where the family is now living, a “Duck Crossing” print for the second child and a Duck Crossing pencil case filled with crayons and the like for the older sibling . The older sibling has one of my prints hanging in her bedroom and now the younger sibling will have Duck Crossing in their bedroom.

A mother visiting from Canberra bought “Graduation Siesta” for her daughter who has just graduated and now has a Medical Radiation Science degree.

Two international students, studying at the University of Tasmania, accounting and engineering, bought some cards and small A-5 sized prints. A group visiting from Taiwan, only spending four days in Tassie, bought “Hanging Out”. They liked that the gum leaves and gum nuts make sort of the same shape as Tasmania.

A lady, visiting from Sydney, chose an “Emu Ice Capades” greeting card. I remarked that it was unusual for somebody to choose an ice-skating card. She said that she and all her children ice skate. Now that’s unusual!! In Tasmania, there is only one ice skating rink for the whole island and the owners have recently retired, so I’m not sure if we still have an ice rink. Are you from the northern hemisphere, I asked? She was born in Australia, and they just spoke German at home, and then they moved to Germany when she was 5 years old. Then they moved back to Australia when she was eight and she couldn’t speak any English when she started school in Australia. Then the family moved back to Germany when she was twelve and then back to Australia when she was sixteen. Needless to say, she’s had an interesting childhood and is fluent in both German and English.

I started packing up early, so that some of the things that had dried, like the sides of the gazebo and table cloths, wouldn’t get wet again.

Time to put my feet up and enjoy a cup of tea.
