Salamanca Market, March 4, 2023

The mornings are getting darker and fresher, but the day turned out to be perfect, not too hot or cool.

My first customer was somebody here for the 2023 Australasian Newborn Hearing Screening Conference, where they test the hearing of babies when they are in the womb. She purchased a “White Faced Scops Owls” and “Glamour Girls” print. I also had somebody from New Zealand, who bought some of my art five years, buy a “White Faced Scops Owls” print. She searched me out, she said.

Salamanca Market, December 17, 2022

The air was crisp and still as the setting up process commenced at 6 am.

On Thursday, when I was doing some restocking at Brooke Street Pier, from behind me somebody said that they loved this artist and it turned out to be the couple from Sydney, who commissioned me to paint their wedding invitation!!

Stunning bride (the painting doesn’t do the dress and shoes justice either. They are gorgeous)

They had their wedding, in Sydney, NSW, on the weekend and had just arrived in Tasmania for their honeymoon. It was so uncanny, unbelievable, and wonderful that we were both at the same place, at the same time. It was lovely to meet them and to meet again at Salamanca Market. At the market, they bought an original Sydney scene painting (to add to their significant PJ Paintings collection) and two “Beachside Chatter” tote bags. Their enthusiasm is humbling.

I don’t seem to have a photo of the completely finished painting of the emu adventure in Sydney

A lady from the Gold Coast, Queensland, purchased a medium sized “Salamanca Fresh” tote bag for an elderly friend. She thought medium was a good size because she can’t carry too much at once anymore.

A doctor, who has her practice in Hobart, stopped in and bought some greeting cards. She told me that she has a print of “White Faced Scops Owls” hanging in her practice and that she gets lots of comments from children and adults alike. She said she tells them “Salamanca Market”. A man from Perth, WA, came in just after she left and bought the same print to give as a Christmas gift to his mother-in-law that loves owls.

A family, originally from Nepal visited. The son wanted to buy “Piggyback” to give to his teacher, so his mother obliged. Her brother has an art gallery for many years in Nepal. Today we had to contend with a LOT of rain but thankfully it wasn’t accompanied with wind, and amazingly, I was able to set up and take down just when there were breaks from the rain. During the downpours, there was a sea of different Hobart hotel umbrellas on view.

A speech pathologist, visiting Tasmania from the mainland of Australia, purchased an A-3 sized “Beachside Chatter” and “Who, Who, Who are You? II” print to hang up in her practice. It will engage children and calm their nerves.

Another small, framed print, “Sea Life” this time, sold to a young lady, who has been working one year and nine months in Sydney but is soon returning to Hong Kong. It was a bit chilly today but there was no rain or wind, so there are no complaints from me. 😊

A couple from Melbourne visited my stall very early in the morning and purchased two original paintings: “Off with the Owls” and a platypus painting. Later in the day, they returned, and bought a framed “Family Outing” print and four A-5 sized prints.

An original painting, titled “Off with the Owls”

Salamanca Market July 2, 2022

I stepped out of the house before 6 am into blackness and 4 degrees Celsius to head off to Salamanca Market, which officially today it returned to “Salamanca Market”. During COVID restrictions it had different rules and was renamed “Tasmanian Own Market”, but everybody still referred to it as Salamanca Market. But now that it “is” Salamanca Market again, all the sites were open and stalls returned to their assigned sites, so there would have been over 300 stalls today.

The Festival of Voices https://festivalofvoices.com/ is on and that could be what was contributing to the busyness today. I wasn’t feeling crash hot today, so I didn’t keep track of too many stories. I started feeling much better as the day went on.

The first customer of the day was from Brisbane, Queensland, a choir performer at the Festival of Voices. She purchased a “Lazy Days” and a “Hanging Out” print.

“Lazy Days”
“Hanging Out” both prints available at https://pjpaintings.com/collections/wombats

A university student bought a “Salamanca Saturday” large tote bag to use to carry her books and study material. Two ladies were walking by, and one of the ladies exclaimed that her son bought her the “Salamanca Saturdays” print (what a lovely son! 😊). She was pleased to meet the artist and told me that she loved it.

A mother and daughter purchased a “Spiky Bunk Beds” and a “Bunk Beds” print to take back to USA with them. They live in New Hampshire.

A grandmother visited the PJ Paintings stall and purchased five prints: “All Ears”, “Helping Hands”, “Scarlet Robin Rescue”, “Friendship Refreshes the Soul” and “Spiky Bunk Beds”. She said that they are going to Manila, Philippines. Then she came back with her daughter and her three children. She bought another print, “Glamour Girls” for another daughter. Her daughter bought three prints of the wombats in hammocks series.

“Helping Hands”
“Scarlet Robin Rescue”
“All Ears”

These three prints are from my Cheer ’em Up series, of scenes where emus come to the rescue and save the day. The emu in the painting titled “All Ears” is such a patient listener that the tip of its beak is getting a little crumpled. This series is available at: https://pjpaintings.com/collections/emus

One young lady was drawn to Tu-whit & Tu-whoo because her grandfather, in Ireland, would pick up the dead ones off the side of the road and get them stuffed. He has a long shelf lined with stuffed barn owls.

“Tu whit & Tu-whoo”

It was good to get home, warm the toes, and sit down with a cup of tea.

Happy Canada Day!

Salamanca Market May 21, 2022

I stepped outside into 5 degrees Celsius blackness, as it takes me about two hours to set up my stall, so I leave my house before 6 am. As we move deeper into winter, my layers of clothing increases. Today, I wore leggings and pants (2 layers). Eventually, it becomes four layers. My toes were a little cold in the morning, unlike my stallholder a few stalls up from me, who showed me his electric socks. It’s like an electric blanket with three different heating settings. It is battery run. I never knew that such a thing existed!

My first visitor was a lady from Western Australia, who told me that every time she comes to Tassie, she buys something of mine. (She wants to move to Tasmania). She has “Two to Tango” and it always generates comments, she said. Today, she purchased a “There’s a Hole in My Stocking, dear Liza, dear Liza”.

My last edition of the A-4 sized print of “Double Date IV” sold today. She bought “The Three Amigos II” to have a pair. Double Date V is on its way.

A couple visiting from the highlands of NSW purchased a “Salamanca Saturdays” tote bag. They said that wombats and emus are a common sight where they live, hence they chose the market scene. https://www.mumpacktravel.com/where-to-see-wombats-in-nsw/

Two girlfriends purchased three original paintings: Fungi Girl, Having a Hoot and Bubble-walking and a “Rising Above It” print. I also received the good news that my large humpback whale, original watercolour painting titled, Gentle Giant, sold at Tiger Ina Papera Unique Woodcraft Salamanca Gallery. The market was a little slower today but that may be because today is election day. It is mandatory in Australia, so people were no doubt doing their civic duty and soon we will find out who our prime minister is. https://www.bbc.com/news/world-australia-61517667
