Salamanca Market, February 4, 2023

Good soaking rain, the kind that gardens love, not Salamanca market stallholders, greeted us this morning. Because my stall is on a slope, I had to build bridges with the lids of my crates, with an edge on the curb and the other side on the pavement, to put my bags of tote bags and the like on, so that the stream of water ran underneath the lids. The kookaburras seemed to be enjoying the steady rain. Thankfully, we did get some breaks from the rain, but it kept reappearing.

My first customer appeared wearing shorts. I didn’t notice because I can’t see people’s legs very easily from over the prints, but he was bemoaning wearing shorts. He just arrived from Brisbane where it is hot and humid, so he had a good excuse. He bought a “Hammock Life” cushion cover.

A family visiting from Munich, Germany, purchased “Silent Disco”. They liked the fairy penguins that come to Tasmania’s shores.

A couple from Brisbane bought “Bunk Beds” for themselves. She loves wombats.

Two brothers from Melbourne purchased “Sitting on the Fence” for their Nanny’s 60th birthday. She brought them to Tassie to celebrate her birthday.

A couple, from the cruise ship docked in Hobart, purchased an original ink and watercolour painting of chickens to hang in their kitchen in Brisbane, Queensland (Qld).

Another original sold today. I titled it, “Mesmerising”. The couple that bought it had bought a “Richmond Bridge, Tasmania” print several years ago. She described that they had it framed in an antique frame, how good it looks, the joy it brings and how much they love it. Stories like that are always so nice to hear.

Two sisters, one living here, who moved from New Zealand with her husband and children, the other from NSW, bought a “Salamanca Saturdays” print for their Mum.

One of many working on the Iron Man event https://www.hobartcity.com.au/Community/Events-and-activities/Upcoming-events/IRONMAN-70.3-Tasmania purchased a “Maggie & Maggie” print. She calls Noosa, Queensland home.

Salamanca Market February 26, 2022

With huge rainfalls and floods in Queensland, and the forecasted week of rain for Hobart, Tasmania, we gratefully accepted the perfect market weather of the day.

My first visitor to the stall bought an “Emu Charleston” and “Family Outing” print for her new house in Newcastle, NSW. She moved in over a year ago and she still has bare walls, which she intends to rectify with these prints.

Emu Charleston

A lady, from Melbourne, visited the stall in the morning and returned in the afternoon. She bought a framed print titled “Who Says Emus Can’t Fly!?” for her son and A-3 sized prints “Supportive Nestworks” and “Salamanca Fresh” for herself. She bought the final limited edition of Salamanca Fresh. There are no A-4s or A-3s left of this image, although there are still a few A-2s limited edition prints.

A young man bought “Glamour Girls” for his mother. He thought she would really like it. His partner chose “The Bun”, “Hair Accessories” and “Enchanted Forest” prints. Another young couple came into the stall and said that they want three cards of threes. They found one with three owls, three emus and three kookaburras. Her triplet brothers’ birthdays are in March. Let me guess, you’re the firstborn, I asked? Correct.

Hair Accessories

A couple from Mountain River, Tasmania, bought five prints. They bought some PJ Paintings prints a couple of years ago for their first grandchild. A couple from the Gold Coast bought “Unwinding”, “The Bun”, “Hair Accessories”, “Bunk beds” and “Friendship Refreshes the Soul”. A man from Cairns also purchased “Hair Accessories” and “Bunk Beds”.

Unwinding

A lady with her adult daughter stopped buy and purchased a “Sea Life” print. It’s the first Saturday she’s had off in two years. She’s a butcher. She has a shop in South Hobart. They’ve been out for breakfast, then the markets and then a show tonight.

Fourteen-year-old, Dorothy, was an unusual market visitor. I was told that she is an African grey. https://lafeber.com/pet-birds/species/african-grey-parrot/

Some small original paintings were sold today too: a spotted quoll, my urban sketches of Claremont House https://hobartandbeyond.com.au/place/claremont-house/ (now permanently closed, unfortunately) and the view from Lindisfarne Bay with the Tasman Bridge https://www.ourtasmania.com.au/hobart/tasman-bridge.html in the backdrop, and Funky Jeans.

The Ashes test series started yesterday at Blundstone Oval, Bellerive, Tasmania, and it will continue for four days. https://www.premier.tas.gov.au/site_resources_2015/additional_releases/tasmania_ready_to_shine_as_global_media_attention_turns_to_hobart_for_historic_ashes_test A man from Melbourne, working at the cricket venue, purchased a “Salamanca Saturdays” limited edition print.

An original painting on Khadi Mill paper, made from recycled cotton rags, titled “A Flair for Fashion” was purchased by a lady, who said it looked just like her sister (let’s hope she doesn’t mind the associated resemblance!). Her sister is returning to London tomorrow, so she’s giving it to her tonight.

“A Flair for Fashion”

Two young ladies from Canberra visited the stall. One bought an A-3 sized print of “Scarlet Robins” for her parent’s 25th wedding anniversary and said that they’re still like lovebirds.

A lady, who is doing done the Three Capes Walk tomorrow, https://www.threecapestrack.com.au/, told me that the airline lost her backpack, and it won’t arrive in time for the walk. That is going to make the walk an even greater challenge. She purchased some greeting cards.

A couple, who bought some of my artwork at Peppercorn Gallery in Richmond, purchased a “Lazy Days” tote bag.

A group of young people, from Brisbane, bought “Bunk Beds’ and “Devilish Siesta” prints.

“Devilish Siesta”

A young lady visiting from Victoria purchased a “Hanging Out” print and a mother, from Beaumaris, Victoria, purchased “Enchanted Forest I and II” for her child’s bedroom. During this purchase, a blanket of darkness came over, the heavens opened, and it bucketed down for about 10 minutes. A stream of water quickly formed and flowed through my stall site. This sudden storm basically instigated a mass stallholders packing-up event, but it was packing-up time, it just brought it into motion with an urgent fervour.

I wish everybody a good week with time etched out for creative pursuits.

Salamanca Market December 18, 2021

Wind gusts of up to 50 kmph were predicted, so all the gazebo sides went up today. With a blue roof and little air circulation, the sauna-like conditions and the pollen from the large tree made it difficult to not sneeze. Thankfully, the 50 kmph didn’t eventuate.

The first couple that visited the stall were from Tamworth, NSW. https://www.destinationtamworth.com.au/   They purchased a “Bunk beds” print and then noticed my Poppy Fields print. They said that they had this print. Her sister, who has bought a lot of art, moved overseas, and couldn’t take it with her, so she gave them her art, which Poppy Fields was among her collection.

Salamanca Market July 31, 2021

It was a mild start to the day and then the rains came. Thankfully it passed. With various states across Australia in lockdowns, the numbers were significantly down at Salamanca Market.

The first sale of the day was a greeting card by a lady visiting from Brisbane. Then a couple visiting from Queensland bought two medium-sized pouches, one for their 4-year-old granddaughter’s birthday. They purchased a “Salamanca Fresh” and “Family Outing” pouch.

Salamanca Market July 3, 2021

Thankfully it was a mild winter’s day today and the 40% chance of forecasted rain decided to opt on the 60% side of the equation. The Melbournian lockdown status has just lifted and there were quite a few people that took advantage of it. One family, her being originally from Tassie, came to visit family. They purchased a “Sea Life” print.

Sea Life

A first time visitor to Tassie, returning to Melbourne tonight, purchased An A-3 sized print of “Goldilocks and the 20 Penguins” and “The Bun”. She said that she loves Tasmania. 🙂

“The Bun”

The Yellow-tailed black cockatoo has a short crown and when the others are flaunting their long, lush crowns, it takes it can take a toll on their self-esteem. I’ve helped them out by giving them hairdos that turns heads.

Another couple that were leaving tonight, were from Invermay, NSW. They purchased “Who, Who, Who are You? II and so did a lady at the very end of the day, while I was packing up, she ordered an A-2 size of the same print to go to Geelong, Victoria. The A-3 sized prints of Who, Who, Who are You? Gallery Opening

Apologies that I’ve been a bit slack with writing blog posts recently. I’ve been rather busy starting the new adventure of opening a gallery in Hobart’s Salamanca Arts Centre in southern Tasmania.

There was a lot of work fitting out a generous-sized and sunlit room, organising insurance, a point of sales system and the like.

painting the creation of the back feature wall

The gallery is featuring a variety of art mediums with a focus on glass. There are many Tasmanian and artists from mainland Australia represented in the gallery.

Tasmanian John Osborne’s lino work in the back and Laurie Young’s glass work in the front left glass tower
A variety of glass, wood and leather work is at Wooby Lane Gallery

We had a soft opening on the wintery evening of June 10, 2021, to officially open the doors of the new Wooby Lane Gallery, on the corner of Salamanca Place and Wooby’s Lane.

The gallery space gives me opportunity to display my framed original paintings and large sized prints.

If, and when you are, in Hobart, I hope you are able to drop in!

Take care and wishing everybody a lovely weekend.

Salamanca Arts Centre

I have been lucky enough to become a co-op member of Artefacts Inc Gallery, located in the historic Salamanca Place in Hobart, Tasmania.

Inside the Salamanca Arts Centre

The art gallery is located in the docks area of Hobart. It is lined by a long row of Georgian sandstone warehouses that were built in the 1830s by hundreds of convicts, who were used to quarry out the cliffs behind Salamanca Place, cut the stone and build the row of sandstone warehouses to store fruit, grain, wool, whale oil and imported goods from around the world.

I’ve been having some fun drawing the Salamanca Arts Centre.

A loose fun sketch with an black Artline pen and a grey COPIC sketch pen. My favourite of all my sketches of the Arts Centre.

Another drawing. This time I didn’t just suggest bricks but drew them in across the whole building.
And last but not least, my second favourite drawing of the Arts Centre.

I hope you get a chance to visit Salamanca Place and see the Georgian built warehouses, kunanyi and the Artefacts Inc Gallery in Hobart, Tasmania.

Gallery duty

It was my first day back at Artefacts Inc Gallery today. It was slow but that meant that I had some time to draw. This is what I drew today at the gallery.

I still need to do more drawing, add paint and then title it.

This is a brooch that is for sale at the gallery made by Caz Francis. The beads are so small and it is such intricate work.

Enjoy your week, stay safe and thank you for visiting, from PJ Paintings
