The air was crisp and still as the setting up process commenced at 6 am.

On Thursday, when I was doing some restocking at Brooke Street Pier, from behind me somebody said that they loved this artist and it turned out to be the couple from Sydney, who commissioned me to paint their wedding invitation!!

They had their wedding, in Sydney, NSW, on the weekend and had just arrived in Tasmania for their honeymoon. It was so uncanny, unbelievable, and wonderful that we were both at the same place, at the same time. It was lovely to meet them and to meet again at Salamanca Market. At the market, they bought an original Sydney scene painting (to add to their significant PJ Paintings collection) and two “Beachside Chatter” tote bags. Their enthusiasm is humbling.

Early in the morning, a mother and young son, purchased “Friendship Refreshes the Soul” and “Suspended”. The young boy was looking forward to seeing Tasmanian Devils on Monday.

A father and daughter, from Montreal, Canada, starting their return trip back to Canada tomorrow after spending 2 weeks in Australia, purchased a “Spiky Bunk Beds” print.

It’s daylight now when I step out the door at 6 am to go to site 30 at Salamanca Market in Hobart, Tasmania.

My first customer of the day was Havier from Toronto, Canada, here on his annual business trip. He’s flying back to Canada, today. It’s a tough, long flight. He’s originally from Chile, South America. His wife was born in Chile and raised in Canada. They had their daughter in Chile, and their son in Canada, where they now reside. During the COVID lock-down, they pushed their 12-year-old daughter to do something constructive and she started drawing and writing comic strips, which she has kept up doing for 2.5 years. She has created a lot of comics! I’m impressed with it all and especially that she can think of so many funny things! Havier bought an “All Ears” and a “Leafy Decorum” print.

When a lady saw a “Leafy sea dragon” greeting card, she said you must be a diver. I’m not, but she is. She is a biologist and has done a lot of diving, including in the Caribbean, where she met her Australian husband-to-be and ended up settling in Sheffield, Tasmania.

A “Fairy wrens” and “Scarlet Robins” print is going to be housed on a property in Queensland rainforest.

A lady from Canberra, on her way to go bush walking in Mt Field, Tasmania, https://www.discovertasmania.com.au/…/mount-field…/ bought an “Afternoon Siesta” print. She said that she didn’t want to buy anything at the market but couldn’t pass by this irresistibly relaxed wombat. Another lady, who couldn’t resist “Afternoon Siesta” was from North Carolina, USA, is visiting her brother, who lives in Australia. Another lady, visiting from Tokyo, Japan, chose the same print.

A couple from Maui, USA, purchased a large “Suspended” print. They’re heading home tomorrow. They’ve been in Australia for three weeks, visiting Sydney, Adelaide and Tasmania.

I had two German couples visit the stall today. Firstly, an older couple, who bought a “Bonnie & Me” print. They have this bike they told me, a Bonneville, Triumph. Then a young German couple arrived. They are spending 12 months in Australia, travelling around in a van. They have 10 months left. They purchased a “Dinner for Five???” print.

Today we had to contend with a LOT of rain but thankfully it wasn’t accompanied with wind, and amazingly, I was able to set up and take down just when there were breaks from the rain. During the downpours, there was a sea of different Hobart hotel umbrellas on view.

A speech pathologist, visiting Tasmania from the mainland of Australia, purchased an A-3 sized “Beachside Chatter” and “Who, Who, Who are You? II” print to hang up in her practice. It will engage children and calm their nerves.

Two sisters from Brisbane bought an “Outback Glamping” print and a “Salamanca Fresh” tote bag. They have another sister and when they are together people think that they are triplets they told me.

A lot of members from a family from Sydney that are attending a cousin’s wedding in the afternoon, bought a “Bunk Beds” print.

A Dutch couple that lived in Perth for nine years and then moved back to Netherlands, and then realised, what have we done??, moved back to Australia. They are planning to settle in Tasmania and are looking for a house in Cygnet. They bought some greeting cards to send to relatives in Netherlands.

A Hobart law and psychology student purchased a small, framed print of “Spanish Eyes (Red). Another small, framed print, “Sea Life” this time, sold to a young lady, who has been working one year and nine months in Sydney but is soon returning to Hong Kong. She has a good job lined up but she is leaving her options open if she doesn’t like it because the country has changed significantly since she has left.

I stepped outside into 5 degrees Celsius blackness, as it takes me about two hours to set up my stall, so I leave my house before 6 am. As we move deeper into winter, my layers of clothing increases. Today, I wore leggings and pants (2 layers). Eventually, it becomes four layers. My toes were a little cold in the morning, unlike my stallholder a few stalls up from me, who showed me his electric socks. It’s like an electric blanket with three different heating settings. It is battery run. I never knew that such a thing existed!

My first visitor was a lady from Western Australia, who told me that every time she comes to Tassie, she buys something of mine. (She wants to move to Tasmania). She has “Two to Tango” and it always generates comments, she said. Today, she purchased a “There’s a Hole in My Stocking, dear Liza, dear Liza”.

A couple from Queensland, after much deliberation, chose a “Bunk Bed Trio” print and another couple from Brisbane, chose “Iconic Aussies”.

Two girlfriends purchased three original paintings: Fungi Girl, Having a Hoot and Bubble-walking and a “Rising Above It” print. I also received the good news that my large humpback whale, original watercolour painting titled, Gentle Giant, sold at Tiger Ina Papera Unique Woodcraft Salamanca Gallery. Obviously today is the day to sell original paintings! 😊

With huge rainfalls and floods in Queensland, and the forecasted week of rain for Hobart, Tasmania, we gratefully accepted the perfect market weather of the day.

My first visitor to the stall bought an “Emu Charleston” and “Family Outing” print for her new house in Newcastle, NSW. She moved in over a year ago and she still has bare walls, which she intends to rectify with these prints.

A lady, from Melbourne, visited the stall in the morning and returned in the afternoon. She bought a framed print titled “Who Says Emus Can’t Fly!?” for her son and A-3 sized prints “Supportive Nestworks” and “Salamanca Fresh” for herself. She bought the final limited edition of Salamanca Fresh. There are no A-4s or A-3s left of this image, although there are still a few A-2s limited edition prints.

A young man bought “Glamour Girls” for his mother. He thought she would really like it. His partner chose “The Bun”, “Hair Accessories” and “Enchanted Forest” prints. Another young couple came into the stall and said that they want three cards of threes. They found one with three owls, three emus and three kookaburras. Her triplet brothers’ birthdays are in March. Let me guess, you’re the firstborn, I asked? Correct.

A couple from Mountain River, Tasmania, bought five prints. They bought some PJ Paintings prints a couple of years ago for their first grandchild. A couple from the Gold Coast bought “Unwinding”, “The Bun”, “Hair Accessories”, “Bunk beds” and “Friendship Refreshes the Soul”. A man from Cairns also purchased “Hair Accessories” and “Bunk Beds”.

A lady with her adult daughter stopped buy and purchased a “Sea Life” print. It’s the first Saturday she’s had off in two years. She’s a butcher. She has a shop in South Hobart. They’ve been out for breakfast, then the markets and then a show tonight.

Wonderful blue skies, sun and heat was served up for today’s market.

It was a day for selling tote bags and pouches. Early in the morning, a couple from northern Queensland, Townsville, bought a “Salamanca Saturdays” tote bag.

Then a nicely bronzed young couple purchased a “Lazy Days” tote bag. She was exuberant about my wombats in hammocks paintings. They were from Melbourne, which surprised me. I thought that they would be from Queensland with their golden suntans. A couple with a large, black assistive dog, that was seeking shade and laying down at every opportunity, purchased “Hanging Out” tote bag. She has a wombat collection, showing me her wombat earrings that she was wearing. They live on the south coast of NSW and have many wild wombats on their property. Their dog is so used to them that he just looks at them now.

A couple spending their last day in Tassie, purchased two wombat prints: “Hanging Out” and “Bunk beds”. They live on a property north-west of Sydney that also has many wombats visit their property and dig plenty of holes/burrows.

A mother bought a “Lazy Days” tote bag for her daughter’s birthday. She’s a wombat rescue carer. A sweet brother, and first-time-uncle-to-be, bought a “Hanging Out” print for his sister, who is having a baby girl in three months. A couple bought two prints. She chose “Hanging Out” and he chose “Suspended”. He said he, “had a thing for whales, my name is Jonah”.

A family visited the stall, and the mother bought her teenage son an “Emu can Fly” print. She said her son’s nick name is “Emu”. I asked him if he likes this nick name, and he does, which was good to hear.

I sold three original paintings today. Two urban sketches and an echidna digging up a bit of a mess.

First urban sketch sold was this one of a house in New Town. She said she couldn’t put it down, so she had to buy it. She appreciated that it is more difficult to omit areas to paint than to paint the entire picture. Omissions involves many more decisions.

The next one to sell was this urban sketch of the Elizabeth Street Post Office, Hobart, drawn and painted sitting in the middle of Franklin Square, behind the fountain and monument.

The third original painting to sell was this painting. It’s hard not to be messy when you’re an echidna and need to dig in old, rotting fallen trees to find ants for dinner

Late in the day, a mother and young son visited the stall and young Fynn chose a “What the Devil?!” pouch…. and then packing-up-time soon snuck up and that’s exactly what I did, packed up, went home, then unpacked and then finally sat down and put my feet up.

Happy New Year and may 2022 be a good year in all ways for you and your families.

Tasmania’s borders opened December 15^th, therefore, there were more tourists from all around Australia at the market. Omicron has also come along with the opened borders, but I don’t see how it was possible to avoid that.

My first visitor to the stall was a lady from Perth, who went to Victoria for her granddaughter’s first birthday and then has spent 15 days in Tasmania to be hopefully allowed back into her state. States have changing and different rules. She is taking back with her, possibly back to Victoria if she’s not allowed back to her state, a “Home Among the Gum Trees” print.

A couple, who had just done the Three Capes Walk https://www.threecapestrack.com.au/, purchased “Hair Acessories” and “The Bun”. They told me that on the first day of the walk they were greeted by a pair of Yellow-tailed black cockatoos. She said it was magical and they were able to watch them at a close range for a few minutes before they flew away.

A couple from Sydney purchased a “Bunk Beds”, Hammock Life” and “Spiky Bunk Beds” prints. “Enchanted Forest I and II” are going to Brisbane to be framed and hung up in their 7-year-old daughter’s bedroom.

A young lady bought A-5 sized prints of “Lazy Days” and “Weightless” to hang up in her bunk area to make it more cheerful she said. She lives on a sailboat.

Two sisters, who saw my art at Peppercorn Gallery, Richmond, purchased a “Scarlet Robins” and “Lazy Days” tote bags, and “Spanish Eyes”, “Bunk Beds” and “Story time” prints.

A lady bought a “Garden Roses” print for her Mum. I cut some these roses from my only rose bush in my garden, brought it inside and thought, hmm, I think I will try to paint these. I particularly liked the challenge and the light on the rose hips.

A young teenager bought herself a small, framed “Southern Flow” print. Later in the afternoon, a lady returned to the stall to buy the same framed print and was met with disappointment as it wasn’t there anymore.

It was a drizzly Saturday and a wet set-up. With The Tasmanian Made Market at the newly refurbished Derwent Entertainment Centre https://www.stadia-magazine.com/news/renovation-refurbishment/tasmanias-derwent-entertainment-centre-renovation-to-feature-digital-first-fan-experience.html and protests in front of the Parliament House, Salamanca Market felt quieter.

The first couple visiting my stall purchased a “Goldilocks and the 20 Penguins” and a “Double Date IV” print. They told me that they have many visitors to their birdfeeder at the Sunshine Coast and that they started taking drawing & painting classes together. They were impressed with my Yellow-tailed black cockatoo in my “Iconic Aussies” print. They had to paint this bird in one of their classes and said that this has helped them gain a greater appreciation for bird paintings. They returned later in the afternoon and up-sized their prints and added “Iconic Aussies” to their purchase.

A lady from Adelaide purchased “Hanging Out”, “Spiky bunk beds” and “Iconic Aussies”. Another lady purchased “Spiky bunk beds” and “Taking it Easy”. I was glad to see this because people have asked me to paint something that more closely matches with Spiky bunk beds’ hammocks, so I painted Taking it Easy, but so far, people haven’t been matching them together, until today. I commented that they were a pair and she immediately acknowledged the same coloured hammocks. It was nice to receive the reinforcement.

An A-3 sized “Weightless” print is heading to Brisbane and “The Three Amigos II” to Toowoomba. She is visiting Tasmania with friends from the Sunshine Coast, Qld.

And on cue, it started raining again when it was packing-up time. On the way home, just before the Tasman Bridge, I saw a stall holder pulled over on the side of the road changing a flat tire. They had all their crates, gazebo, shelving and the like, on the ground, to be able to get their reserve tire out. I felt very sorry for them and so grateful to be able to get home, get wet things airing and make myself a cup of tea!

It was a rather slow-moving day at the market on Saturday but there was a lot to be thankful for. The sun, and not the wind, was out, and there were no driverless vehicles on the move. Last week, a van was left in neutral without the handbrake on and the van rolled into my next-door neighbour’s gazebo.

The morning started off with “Suspended” being purchased by a lady who informed me that it was going to hang in her boat.

Three girlfriends from the northwest coast of Tassie, helped one choose an A-3 sized print of “Glamour Girls”. She wants to hang it above her bathtub. A local Hobartian, who collects fairy wren items, purchased a “Meet Me at the Gate” print. A “Meet Me at the Gate” framed print was also purchased by another Hobart resident.

A couple purchased a “Bunk beds”, “Hanging Out” and “Devilish Siesta” to hang up in their Bed & Breakfast accommodation in St. Helen’s, Tasmania. At the very end of the day, during packing up, there were two couples buying similar sets of prints, but I didn’t have the opportunity to chat much, but I do know that one was a graphic designer. I was quite keen to depart as soon as I could to get home, unpack the car, and get changed to go see the Tasmanian Symphony Orchestra play Beethoven IV. https://www.tso.com.au It was a wonderful concert. 😊

As I write this post, on Sunday morning, it is raining and the Derwent River is awash with white caps, which makes me feel even more thankful for yesterday’s calm and mild conditions. Due to the ideal winter weather conditions of yesterday, there were more people out and about.

My first customers at the stall were three sisters, meeting up in Tassie, where one of the sister lives, to celebrate a sister’s birthday. One purchased a “Salamanca Fresh” tote bag and another bought an A-4 sized print of “Meet Me at the Gate” for her friend’s Christmas present. They meet at the gate to go walking together and she loves fairy wrens. A gift tailored for the individual!

Then I met a locum nuclear medicine specialist doing a stint at the hospital here but because of the lockdowns he was not going home for his few weeks off. His daughter, who lives and teaches in the ACT, takes teenagers scuba diving, climbing Mt Kosciuszko and the like to teach them resilience, teamwork, build confidence and many other valuable life skills, loves whales. https://www.visitnsw.com/destinations/snowy-mountains/kosciuszko-national-park/summit-walk

A young lady, looking for a gift for her girlfriend, who lives in the Richmond, Tasmania area, bought her a “Two to Tango” tote bag. This is another tailored made gift because this girlfriend has a male and female emu as pets!! Their names are Ernie and Bert! 😊 Emus as pets are unusual pets but having emu pets in Tasmania is even more unusual because they are not endemic to Tasmania. I was pretty keen on packing up and getting away as soon as the gates opened. I was making good time and everything was fitting back into the car quite well and when I finished, I saw my gazebo standing there trying to look inconspicuous. Arg. I had to unpack half the car to pack it again, then got home and unpacked again and then headed out to the Welcome Swallow Brewery’s opening celebrations. https://www.welcomeswallow.com.au/ It’s an awesome venue and space. It was a great evening with amazing tasting boutique beer, made from Nigel’s homegrown, organic hops and raspberries.
