Salamanca Market Update, April 24, 2021

I left the house when it was still dark and lightly raining. Lucky for us the skies cleared, and it ended up being a mild day. Also, lucky for us, is that we’re a COVID-free state of Australia (I say this while knocking on wood – where does that saying come from?? https://www.history.com/news/why-do-people-knock-on-wood-for-luck), visitors from interstate were out and about enjoying the wonderful Salamanca Market.

Two ladies, visiting from Queensland, purchased two tote bags, “Salamanca Fresh” and “Lazy Days”, an A-3 sized print of “Tu-whit & Tu whoo”, “Goldilocks and the 20 Penguins” and “Off to the Races!” for one of their girlfriend’s birthday.

Three prints are going to decorate baby girl Charli’s bedroom in Sydney: “Four Iconic Aussies”, “House Sharing” and I can’t remember what the third print was.

Four Iconic Aussies
House Sharing

A man, living near Ballarat, said that they bought a “Tu-whit & Tu-whoo” print a few years ago and his wife has colour co-ordinated the whole bedroom around the print, the walls and curtains!

One lady visited my stall and said she’d come back and when she did, she said, “your stall is my favourite”. Aww, now that warms the heart!

A grandmother, from Melbourne, keen to decorate her granddaughters’ bedroom, chose “Lazy Days” and “Spiky Bunk Beds” prints. One to hang above each bed.

A visitor from Bendigo, purchased “Kookaburra Rescue”. She hasn’t painted for years but when she did, she said that she liked putting smiles on faces too.

A gentleman, in his thirties, bought “The Bun” and “Hair Accessories” for his friend’s mother’s birthday. His friend’s mother must have been good to him over the years! She loves black cockatoos.

A young Brisbane couple are taking back an A-4 sized print, called “Suspended”.

A couple from Adelaide, he was telling me how much he loved Adelaide, whereas the woman was not speaking as glowingly about the city. It was funny hearing opposite opinions from them. They bought a bunch of greeting cards. Two young ladies from Sydney browsed, left, and then came back and bought some greeting cards. A lot of cards were sold today, including Christmas cards. I totally sold out of them. I will have to bring more when I go back in a fortnight.

Until then, take good care of yourselves during this challenging time of living with a pandemic.

From PJ Paintings

It raises more questions than answers

Sometimes a painting raises more questions than answers.

Why is an octopus sitting on a Yellow-tailed black cockatoo’s head???!!

Hair Something??

What was I thinking!!?? and I’ll pre-empt suggestions of being under any influence of any kind when I painted this.

Some background information may provide you an insight into this creation.

Sea Shepherd asked if I would donate work for their fundraiser, something different to whales that I had painted last year for them. The creative juices started flowing. I’m not sure what prompted my brain to think of Yellow-tailed black cockatoos but that’s where my brain went. Maybe because I often see them from my house, here in southern Tasmania https://birdlife.org.au/bird-profile/Yellow-tailed-Black-Cockatoo

When I started thinking about them and the fact that out of all the black cockatoos that they are the ones who possess the shortest crowns, I started empathising about their situation that when the other cockatoos flaunted their glorious, big, luscious crowns that they may feel a little inferior with their stubby, unimpressive crowns. And then I thought, well maybe I could help them and I painted the following:

The Bun
Hair Accessories
Hair Extensions

For the fourth painting in the series, I did the octopus. The creative process involves trial and error. Sometimes it is successful and sometimes it is not. Trying and taking risks is the important thing. Although, I hesitate to name the Hair Something an error because I think there probably is somebody out there with a quirky bend that will absolutely love it and the painting will end up taking pride of place in somebody’s lounge room.

I salute quirky-like minded, creative risk-taking people and may you walk tall, with or without, an octopus on your head.

Cheers, Patricia (PJ)

Salamanca Market Update, April 3, 2021

It was hot today (29C), and windy in the afternoon. A bunch of prints got blown off the table but other than that, I got through unscathed.

A lady, from Sydney, bought a “Tu-whit & Tu-whoo” A-3 sized print a few years ago, framed it and has it hanging in her holiday house in the Hunter Valley region, NSW . She said it looks beautiful and gets so many comments on it that she wants one for her house in Sydney. So, she bought another “Tu-whit & Tu-whoo” print.

A couple, who moved to Tassie in 2006 from Western Australia, who already have “White Faced Scops Owls“ and “G’Day”, added Lazy Days to their Pj Paintings collection.

A family visiting from Townsville, twin brother and sister, about 10 years old, decided to buy “What the Devil” as their Tasmanian souvenir.

A lady, who is going to attend her cousin’s wedding on Steele Island, bought a “Two to Tango” card for the couple and a “The Three Amigos” print for herself. I had never heard of Steele Island until today and it is part of Tasmania. http://www.steelesisland.com/aboutus.html

A bunch of European young ladies dropped in, mainly from Italy and Germany, who are on working and/or visiting visas. They’ve been in Australia for over a year, unable to get back to their countries of origin due to COVID. They were saying how Australia is the best country to live with the COVID virus. One, is going back to Germany in three weeks. She got a paralegal job offer that she said she couldn’t resist. All her family caught COVID in the first wave and that Germany is now experiencing their third wave. She bought a wombat print to take back with her.

A “Double Date III” print is going back to Canberra, along with tote bags going to just about every state in Australia and abroad. So many tote bags sold today! I couldn’t keep up with keeping track them.

Time to put my feet up and enjoy a cup of tea. I’ll be back at the market in two or three weeks.

Wishing you an awesome Easter weekend.
