Salamanca Market September 30, 2023

It was sunny and warm, and busy all day, despite it being the AFL Grand Final today. There were lots of people around that were not the least bit interested in the AFL or were blissfully unaware of this major Australian event, that just about stops the nation. It was the Brisbane Lions against the Collingwood Magpies, and the Magpies won by a small margin of four points. Quite a few Maggie prints and tote bags sold today but nobody tied their choice to football, rather to feeding their regular visitors.

My first sale of the day was a medium sized “What the Devil!?!” pouch to someone visiting from Sydney. Then a fellow Salamanca Market stallholder “Lazy Days” tote bag for her sister in Germany.

Small ‘What the Devil!?’ pouch available at Salamanca Market and http://www.pjpaiintings.com

A “White Faced Scops Owls” print was purchased because owls were her mother’s favourite bird. She passed away a month ago, the day after her 86th birthday. She celebrated her birthday with family, including her grandchildren, great-grandchildren, and a gin & tonic. The print is going to Mudgee, NSW. https://www.visitnsw.com/…/country-nsw/mudgee-area/mudgee

A couple from Haven, Victoria, purchased a “Salamanca Saturdays” print. I commented that Haven is a nice name for a town. They thought Snug, which is a Tasmanian town, was equally nice. I agreed, it is a better name than the town named Ouse that is another Tasmanian town. They laughed.

A couple from New Zealand purchased “Glamour Girls”. She has three retired, glamorous girlfriends. A “Hanging Out” tote bag and a “Friendship Refreshes the Soul” cushion cover is going for a long journey to North Wales.

“Glamour Girls” Quality prints of Glamour Girls are available at: https://pjpaintings.com/collections/emus/products/glamour-girls-1

A visitor from Queensland, visiting her brother, who lives in Franklin, Tasmania, bought a “Salamanca Fresh” tote bag and an original urban sketch of part of the Governor House I did.

A “Meet Me at the Gate” tote bag was bought for her mother-in-law and a “Bathing Beauties” one as a gift for herself.

available in three sizes: small, medium or large https://pjpaintings.com/collections/bags/products/tote-bag-of-bathing-beauties

A visitor from Taiwan purchased some prints for her souvenir. She chose ”Enchanted Forest III”, “Wombat Adventurer”, “Dinner for Five” and “Hanging Out”. Some visitors from South Africa also bought some souvenir prints. They will be returning with “Spiky Bunk Beds”, “Family Bunk Beds” and “Hanging Out”.

A woman from Melbourne bought two “Meet Me at the Gate” prints, one for her sister. She said that fairy wrens were her Mum’s favourite bird. She passed away last year, and they’ll meet her at the gate when it’s their time to go.

Then I had a man who stopped in. He is originally from Czechoslovakia, living in Australia. His Swiss wife and him are going to Europe to visit family and friends, and he was looking for Australian gifts. He bought some Enchanted Forest III, Scarlet Robins, Fairy wrens, Family Bunk Beds, Hanging Out and Hammock Life prints.

The wind picked up in the afternoon, so it was good to be able to pack up and escape before any damage occurred.

Wishing you a great upcoming week.

Salamanca Market September 23, 2023

The bell bird was at Salamanca Market again this week, doing its magical “bell” sounding birdsong. It is such a stunning sound. Here’s a link to hear them https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=VZ_ku7MyE7w

My first customer of the day was from northern Queensland and they purchased a “Lazy Days” print.

Then a family with four children arrived and they purchased a “What the Devil!?” bag. They laughed when I told them the title and I think that is what won them over.

A couple from Townsville bought “Maggie & Maggie” because they love magpies, not magpie supporters. I thought that magpie prints might move well today after Collingwood Magpies’ one point win last night against the Great Western Sydney Giants in the AFL preliminary finals.

A mother and daughter purchased prints of her two favourite birds, the kookaburra and magpie, for their White Beach holiday house. https://tasman.org.au/explore-the-region/white-beach She told me that her daughter was born in Edmonton, Canada, when they worked there for a few years.

I brought a new original painting to the market today and it was on display for less than two hours before it was purchased. Unfortunately, I forgot to take a photo of the finished painting. I named it “Jump for Joy” and had painted a shadow spot under the platypus.

Jump for Joy

They also purchased “Silent Disco”. The couple have bought a new house in Sydney, and she said she will look at the happy art every day. They saw two fairy penguins cross the road in Bicheno, Tasmania. It’s such a special memory for them to take with them. https://tasmania.com/points-of-interest/bicheno/

A ”Scarlet Robins” print was purchased for his daughter who is turning 28. She works at a local wildlife park.

Four prints are going to Dorset, UK, with their new owner: “Hayride”, “Hammock Life”, “Hanging Out” and “Bathing Beauties”.

Hanging Out Quality, archival prints of Hanging Out are available at https://pjpaintings.com/collections/wombats/products/wombat-hanging-out
Bathing Beauties Quality prints available at https://pjpaintings.com/collections/emus/products/bathing-beauties

Then a young couple from the midlands, UK, purchased an “Enchanted Forest III” print.

Enchanted Forest III
Quality prints, printed on 310gsm print version of watercolour paper, are available at https://pjpaintings.com/collections/birds/products/enchanted-forest-iii

Then another couple from the UK came into the stall. Three in a row from the UK. They were from Cumbria. https://www.visitcumbria.com/about-cumbria/introduction-to-cumbria/ They were reluctantly making their way home they said. They’ve been in South Korea for two and a half years teaching at an international school. “Hammock Life”, “Devilish Siesta” and “Weightless” will now be accompanying them for the rest of their journey.

A gentleman bought a “Sitting on the Fence” print. He lives in the Atherton Tablelands near Cairns, where plenty of kookaburras live. https://www.cairns-australia.com/atherton-tablelands.html . Then a gentleman visiting from Malaysia bought the same print. He is an avid bird photographer and showed me his stunning photos of equally stunning Malaysian birds.

Then I had a visitor whose flight to Perth, WA, had been postponed for seven hours, which gave her time to experience Salamanca Market. She bought a “A Spot of Happiness” print. The wombat is having a visit with an endangered Forty-spotted pardalote.

A visitor from Waratah, Victoria, which is near to Wilsons Promontory, purchased a “Surfing Clifton Beach, Tasmania” print for her holiday house there. She already has three other prints of mine hanging in the holiday house.

Then I had somebody purchase a “Helping Hands” print. She loved the art and said she’s never seen anything like it before.

I sold out of “What the Devil!?” today. Lucky, I have more at home. 😊 I’ll have to re-stock before Saturday rolls around again.

In the meantime, have a great week.

Salamanca Market September 16, 2023

Rain and wind gusts of up to 60 kph were forecasted for today. Luckily the wind gusts occurred during the night as evidenced by driving over branches and debris littering the streets in the morning. It rained all day long. It stopped and started repeatedly the entire day.

While setting the gazebo, we heard a bird that sounded like the bellbird or bell miner. I didn’t think they were in Tasmania but maybe with climate change they have arrived here. I’ve heard them in eucalyptus forests in mainland Australia and it is just the most incredible, beautiful sound. It is amazing how loud their bell sound is. Here’s a link to hear them https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=VZ_ku7MyE7w

My first customers were sisters, one who lives in California, USA, and the other in Queensland, Australia. One of the sisters purchased a “Family Bunk Beds” print.

Next, a “Wombat Adventurer” print (such a cute little face!) was purchased for her partner’s son who is having a baby. She travelled from Burnie, Tasmania, to Hobart for the three-day Gin Festival. https://ginevents.com.au/hobart-gin-festival-september-2023/

A father and daughter purchased a “Morning Melody” print. They are going on a Bruny Island cruise on Monday. It’s a belated present, postponed due to COVID lockdowns.

Morning Melody

A couple, from Launceston, which apparently was blowing a gale when they left, bought a “Spiky Bunk Beds” print for his daughter that loves echidnas.

Three friends, travelling together from Taiwan, are now travelling with a “Joy ride” print.

https://pjpaintings.com/collections/emus/products/joy-ride

Five-year-old Lindsey helped her Mum choose “Lazy Days” and “Who says Emus can’t Fly?!” prints.

I met a young lady from Brittany, France, who is here for three months to learn English. She bought some Australian bird greeting cards.

“Goldilocks and the 20 Penguins” and “All Ears” are going home to Hong Kong.

Then a woman, who is on a holiday with a group of cousins from various cities around Australia, chose a “Double Date V” and “Southern Flow” print.  https://pjpaintings.com/collections/birds/products/double-date-v-superb-blue-fairy-wren-prints

And finally, there was the arduous task of packing everything into the car in the rain. Needless to say, it was good to get home and changed into dry clothes. What a day.

Wishing you a great week.

Salamanca Market September 9, 2023

Despite it being a cold and blustery day today, the market was busy.

Imagine my joy when my first visitors to the stall came carrying a “Lazy Days” tote bag! They bought a “Tickle My Toes” print and a “Beachside Chatter” tote bag to post to their daughter, who is currently living in Canada.

A grandmother from Queensland bought a “Bunk Beds” tote bag. She said they are her and her grandchildren. I asked if she had four? She has two and is hoping for two more!

A couple, with an advisory friend, from Queensland, visiting Tasmania to attend a wedding, bought some art to put in the nursery for their first child due in January. She loves penguins, so she chose “Silent Disco” and “Goldilocks and the 20 Penguins” https://pjpaintings.com/collections/birds/products/dancing-penguins. Then she spotted “Wombat Adventurer”, so that was added to her bag. Then she looked through the original paintings rack and added “Balancing Act”, “Somebody Doesn’t Like Wet Feet”, and “Warm and Cosy”.  So, six pieces of art is going to be adorning this child’s bedroom.

Five small zip pouches and A-5 prints will be returning to Adelaide in a roundabout way. She flew from Adelaide, met her sister in Melbourne and took the ferry to Tasmania, to attend a wedding on September 3rd. It was a beautiful wedding and weather.

A mother and daughter down from Burnie, Tasmania, who bought a “The Three Amigos II” print last year, which is now framed and hanging up in their house, chose a “Lazy Days” print to join the kookaburras.

A “Lazy Days” cushion cover and tote bag, and a “What the Devil??” tote bag is travelling to Brisbane. They are Christmas presents. Actually, several people today told me that they were buying the art for Christmas. https://pjpaintings.com/collections/bags/products/tote-bag-lazy-days-1

Then I met a New Zealander on a working holiday. She’s doing an 8-week stint in Launceston. She’s a vet. She’s done veterinarian work on the mainland and now she is making her way back home. She purchased an “Enchanted Forest III” print.

A couple from New Mexico, USA, purchased “Hanging Out” and “Bunk Beds” tote bags. They are going to see some of the mainland of Australia, and she is going to be teaching an acrylic and textile art class in Ballarat, Victoria.

Lots of people chose to buy “Silent Disco” this weekend. It’s funny how it changes from week to week. I reckon that today “Silent Disco” was the most popular.

I was happy to finally escape the wind, get home and put my feet up.

Wishing you plenty of feet-up times of relaxation this week.

Salamanca Market September 2, 2023

A pademelon watched from the side of the road as I slowly crept down the road in the wee hours of the morning. It was clear skies today. It’s great to have a market day with no wind or rain issues.

My first customers were a group from Sydney that have come to Tasmania to do the Three Capes Walk. https://www.threecapestrack.com.au/ One wanted to do the walk before her son’s arrival. She bought “Tickle My Toes” for her son, “Silent Disco” for her daughter, and “Sitting on the Fence” for herself. https://pjpaintings.com/…/birds/products/dancing-penguins

A couple that has recently moved to Launceston after living nine years in Mt. Isa, Queensland, followed by five years in Sydney, NSW, and now Tasmania, purchased a “Salamanca Saturdays” print. https://pjpaintings.com/…/products/salamanca-saturdays

A local Hobartian, with a bag full of fresh produce from the market, bought a “Family Outing” print for a 3-year-old boy. The family has just moved into a new house, and he has nothing on the wall in his bedroom. The red mini will brighten the room. https://pjpaintings.com/colle…/emus/products/family-outing

“Lazy Days” and “The Three Amigos II” are heading Surrey, UK. I asked if they were a gift for someone? She replied that they are for her. A “Salamanca Saturdays” is also travelling to the UK with another visitor.

A nurse doing temporary work at the Royal Hobart Hospital, that I’ve met before, purchased “Maggie”, “Lost Worlds”, and “Family Bunk Beds” prints. Maggie is for her dad’s Father’s Day present. She’s going to Queensland for two weeks to visit her family. https://pjpaintings.com/…/maggie-a-print-of-a…

Another New Zealander purchased a “Hayride” and “Spiky Bunk Beds” print. https://pjpaintings.com/collections/emus/products/hayride

Hayride

At closing time, I sold an original painting titled “Tagging Along”.

Tagging Along

And then, I had three stallholders looking through my greeting cards, while I’m trying to pack up, mind you. One stallholder wanted me to personalise a card she was giving to her dad, who is having knee surgery. She asked me to add the word ‘knee’ to her Get Well card. So, with a black and blue pen, I wrote ‘Get Knee Well Soon’ on the card. We’re not annoying you at all, are we? they asked in gist, laughing, thinking all this extra activity was hilarious. As a result of these very, very late purchases, I headed home later than usual.

Wishing you a good week.

Until next week, take care,
