Lochner Street

My sketch of cottages on Lochner Street, North Hobart, Tasmania.

I situated myself on the other side of the street to draw these.

Hobart is lucky to have so many gorgeous cottages to sketch.

I hope that you have a chance to enjoy quaint houses, picket fences and gardens.

Warmest regards, from Patricia (PJ)

Salamanca Market, November 19, 2022

The sky was a glowing orange-red when I left the house for Salamanca Market this morning.

My first customer of the day was somebody from Sydney visiting Tasmania. She’s looking forward to doing her three-day acrylic class that she enrolled in. She purchased a “Salamanca Saturdays” cushion cover to remember her Tasmanian visit.

A family of four were drawn into the PJ Paintings stall by the 9-year-old son. A “Sitting on the Fence” print. I gave him a hefty discount. They used to live in Tasmania and now they live in Melbourne. They are here for their Nan’s 80th birthday, along with her other 18 grandchildren that live all over Australia and have also made the journey for this milestone birthday.

A grandmother bought an “Unwinding” print for her 4-year-old grandson and a teacher working across two primary schools bought four emu prints to display in both her offices. She wanted the emus because she thinks that the children will engage with them. She purchased “Family Outing”, “Glamour Girls”, “Story time” and “Joy ride”.

Evelyn, from Netherlands, who has relatives living in Australia, is visiting Australia five weeks. She paints water colour landscapes. She purchased a “The Three Amigos” print.

“The Three Amigos II” Prints of these kookaburras are available at: https://pjpaintings.com/collections/birds/products/the-three-amigos

A lady, living approximately 80km from Melbourne, in regional Victoria, bought a “Christmas Siesta” print. She has a wombat that lives on her property, and she has recently spotted an echidna! I forgot to ask her if she has named her wombat.

This wombat has given its hammock a rather Christmas festive appeal. Prints of my original painting are available at: https://pjpaintings.com/collections/christmas/products/christmas-christmas-siesta

Drawing Challenges

Greetings. I hope all is well with you.

I wasn’t able to do Salamanca Market today, so I thought I would write a re-cap of October’s drawings.

October is a busy month with the annual Inktober Challenge taking place. During this month, there is a prompt word for each day to produce a drawing from.

This is challenging enough but then I stumbled across Wombatober, which has a list of prompt words for the month of October too. I didn’t produce 62 drawings. I wish I had! But doing two paintings a day is a bit much when you are running a business, doing gallery duty, Salamanca Market and life in general. I’m glad I took up the challenges and produced what I did.

Here are my favourites:

Inktober –  Day 7 – Prompt Word “Trip”

Wombatober – Day 13 – Prompt Word “Dress Up”

Inktober – Day 16 – Prompt Word “Fowl”

The Australian Ibis is a native Australian bird. It has the unenviable “Bin Chicken’ nickname. Many of the ibis have moved into mainland Australian cities and they love to go through the rubbish bins. “Sooooo, you’re the one giving us a bad name!”, says the chicken.

Wombatober – Day 14 – Prompt Word “Toy”

“I want to join the circus when I grow up”.

Inktober – Day 24 – “Fairy”

Wombatober – Day 26 – Prompt Word “Swinging”

Inktober – Day 14 – “Empty”

The feeling you get when you arrive at the beach and it is empty, which is not a rare occurrence on island Tasmania with its just over 500,000 population.

Wombatober – Day 27 – Prompt Word “Warm Drink”

Some of these original paintings are for sale on my website. Most are approximately 20 x 20 cm, painted on Khadi Mill paper made from recycled cotton rags. www.pjpaintings.com/collections/originals

What have you been up to during the month of October?

Wishing you a great month with prompts that result in satisfying accomplishments and a day of pampering.

Wombatober – Day 18 – Prompt Word “Pamper Day”

Cheers for now, Patricia Hopwood-Wade

Salamanca Market, November 5, 2022

It’s daylight now when I step out the door at 6 am to go to site 30 at Salamanca Market in Hobart, Tasmania.

My first customer of the day was Havier from Toronto, Canada, here on his annual business trip. He’s flying back to Canada, today. It’s a tough, long flight. He’s originally from Chile, South America. His wife was born in Chile and raised in Canada. They had their daughter in Chile, and their son in Canada, where they now reside. During the COVID lock-down, they pushed their 12-year-old daughter to do something constructive and she started drawing and writing comic strips, which she has kept up doing for 2.5 years. She has created a lot of comics! I’m impressed with it all and especially that she can think of so many funny things! Havier bought an “All Ears” and a “Leafy Decorum” print.

When a lady saw a “Leafy sea dragon” greeting card, she said you must be a diver. I’m not, but she is. She is a biologist and has done a lot of diving, including in the Caribbean, where she met her Australian husband-to-be and ended up settling in Sheffield, Tasmania.

A “Fairy wrens” and “Scarlet Robins” print is going to be housed on a property in Queensland rainforest.

A lady from Canberra, on her way to go bush walking in Mt Field, Tasmania, https://www.discovertasmania.com.au/…/mount-field…/ bought an “Afternoon Siesta” print. She said that she didn’t want to buy anything at the market but couldn’t pass by this irresistibly relaxed wombat. Another lady, who couldn’t resist “Afternoon Siesta” was from North Carolina, USA, is visiting her brother, who lives in Australia. Another lady, visiting from Tokyo, Japan, chose the same print.

A couple from Maui, USA, purchased a large “Suspended” print. They’re heading home tomorrow. They’ve been in Australia for three weeks, visiting Sydney, Adelaide and Tasmania.

I had two German couples visit the stall today. Firstly, an older couple, who bought a “Bonnie & Me” print. They have this bike they told me, a Bonneville, Triumph. Then a young German couple arrived. They are spending 12 months in Australia, travelling around in a van. They have 10 months left. They purchased a “Dinner for Five???” print.

Warm Drink

Good evening,

I trust that you are well.

I painted this for Day 27 of the Wombatober Challenge. The prompt word is “Warm Drink”.

Home Sweet, Cosy, Home

I love painting cosy, warm interiors. I think it must link back to my favourite book when I was a young child called “Bonne Nuit Petit Ours”. I loved the illustrations of the different rooms of the house.

one page from the book “Bonne Nuit Petit Ours”

I hope that you are cosy and enjoying a warm drink.

Have a good week.

Cheers, from Patricia (PJ) Hopwood-Wade
